Coaching Carousel Continues: Tennessee Volunteers Lose Assistant to James Madison
Table of Contents
The Tennessee Volunteers face ongoing challenges as they prepare for their bowl game against the Illinois Fighting Illini, including the recent departure of an assistant coach to a rival program. The team is navigating a period of transition following the conclusion of the regular season and ahead of a key matchup in Nissan Stadium.
Preparing for the Illinois Bowl Game
The Volunteers recently completed their regular season and are now focused on their upcoming bowl game against the Illinois Fighting Illini, set to be played in Tennessee. The contest, scheduled to take place inside Nissan Stadium – home of the Tennessee Titans – is generating interest, particularly as it marks a return to the same venue where the Vols played the Virginia Cavaliers two seasons ago. That game served as Joe Milton’s debut following the departure of former quarterback Hendon Hooker.
Defensive Staff Overhaul
Beyond the on-field preparations, the Volunteers have been addressing changes within their coaching staff. Following the departure of defensive coordinator Tim Banks, the program announced the addition of Jim Knowles, a national championship-winning defensive coordinator from the Ohio State Buckeyes. Knowles spent the most recent season with the Penn State Nittany Lions before joining the Volunteers. Currently, William Inge is serving as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Offensive Line Coach Departs for New Role
The most recent coaching shift involves assistant offensive line coach Phil Serchia, who has accepted a position with James Madison University. According to reports from Matt Zenitz, Serchia will take on a larger role as the Dukes’ tight ends coach. “James Madison is hiring Tennessee assistant offensive line coach Phil Serchia as tight ends coach, a source tells @CBSSports,” Zenitz reported via his X account. Serchia previously spent two seasons as an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL.
Napier’s Influence
James Madison is now under the leadership of head football coach Billy Napier, who previously served as the head coach for the Florida Gators. While Napier represents a rival program to the Volunteers, a sense of professional respect exists, as he builds his staff at James Madison. Securing Serchia is considered a significant addition for the former Gators coach.
The coaching changes underscore the dynamic nature of college football and the constant competition for talent, both on the field and on the sidelines. The Volunteers will need to adapt and maintain momentum as they prepare for their bowl game and the challenges of the upcoming season.
