British Museums Union proposed to “decolonize” the image of Santa Claus. He is accused in colonial thinking and discrimination against non-western children. The idea caused a wave of outrage and the harsh reaction of the British media.
Brighton and Hove museums are at the centre of a debate after a proposal emerged to “decolonize” Santa Claus, sparking meaningful backlash. A blog post from the city’s museum union argues the customary depiction of Santa Claus perpetuates colonial thinking and potentially discriminates against children from non-Western backgrounds.
The authors contend that Santa Claus embodies a “white Western moral judge,” failing to acknowledge the complexities faced by colonized people and overlooking the traditions of diverse communities. They suggest Santa’s workshop should “hire people from all over the world” and question the Western-centric “good/bad” reward system.
The proposal extends to reimagining the figure of Santa Claus altogether, suggesting alternatives like “Mother Christmas” or a working-class Santa alongside his elf colleagues, aiming to reject what they describe as a “colonial narrative of domination.”
The German publication BILD questioned the proposal, asking what option system of morality would replace the traditional one,a question the museum’s blog post does not address.
The suggestion has ignited strong reactions within British society. The Telegraph newspaper commented that while the idea could be interpreted as satire, its serious presentation is unsettling.
The museum union clarified that the post, originally published in 2023, was intended “to provoke thought” and not to dictate how Christmas should be celebrated. They emphasized it was an attempt to explore perspectives beyond a “white Western point of view.”
did you know?-The Brighton and Hove museum union’s proposal sparked debate over whether traditional depictions of Santa Claus reinforce colonial power structures and exclude non-Western cultures. The post was intended to encourage critical thinking about cultural depiction.
Separately, reports have surfaced regarding legal cases in the UK. The Athens News reported that Luke Yarwood was sentenced to 18 months in jail for posting messages critical of immigration following a Christmas market incident.
concerns have also been raised regarding religious freedom. Claims circulating online allege that the UK Council intends to ban Christians from public prayer, potentially leading to jail time for those handing out religious materials. These claims suggest Islamic prayers will be permitted publicly five times daily while restricting Christian expression.
Zara Sultana,a Member of Parliament, has called for a referendum on the future of the monarchy, with her party advocating for its abolition.
Reports also indicate the emergence of temporary tents for Islamic preaching in cities like glasgow, while a Christian priest was recently arrested for conducting street sermons.
