According to tradition, the President of the Republic hosts at the Quirinale the candidates for the David di Donatello that will be awarded on May 3. Minister Franceschini: “We do not hide the critical issues, there is a real crisis in cinemas”.

The traditional invitation of the Quirinale to Italian cinema, on the eve of the David di Donatello awarded on May 3, live on Rai1 by Carlo Conti and Drusilla Foer, records two novelties: the live musical interlude with fragments of soundtracks played by the quartet of the pianist Rita Marcotulli, but above all the political slant of the intervention of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who spoke of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He cited Sophia Loren, “the first woman to win the Oscar with a film not in English, La Ciociara, which in a sequence (the rape, ed) recalls the horrors we are witnessing today”. He said that «war is an unacceptable aggression», he recalled «solidarity with Ukrainian cinema», he added that «culture does not stop, it unites, goes beyond borders: it is fundamental to recreate conditions of peace. The unfortunate choice to resort to brutality must not tear the precious bond between the European peoples. Italy needs its cinema and cinema needs Italy ». The David di Donatello, chaired by Piera Detassis, are presented with very high quality films, and the Minister for Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini has also underlined this, not hiding the critical issues: “There is a real crisis that concerns the cinemas, we must support them, they are places of aggregation and socializing, not just commercial establishments but cultural centers. We need a law and more resources to modernize the rooms ».

Finally Franceschini recalled that state support for the sector has increased, “from 150 million in 2014 to 400 million in 2017, now almost 750 million euros go to the cinema”. The increase is naturally linked to the closure of cinemas caused by the pandemic over the past two years. The figures, and the comparison with other European countries, as the CEOs of Rai Cinema and Medusa Paolo Del Brocco and Giampaolo Letta recalled in an article in Corriere della Sera, are merciless: in 2021, Italian cinema has less than 7 percent compared to 2020, while France shows more 47.5 percent, Great Britain more 75 percent, Germany more twenty percent, Spain more 45 percent. At the Quirinale there were all the candidates, with the exception of Nanni Moretti (Three floors, the first screenplay not written by him, has only one nomination among the non-original scripts), the special David Antonio Capuano and Elio Germano in the running for Latin America. Giovanna Ralli David at her career said, excited, hidden behind a pair of dark goggles: “It’s a 70-year career, I started at 13 as an extra at Cinecittà, and I couldn’t wait to eat the lunch basket on the steps . I worked with great screenwriters, I made films that I loved so much, I’m happy for Sabrina (Ferilli, David too), we are two Roman who love Rome ». The main nominations are for E ‘è stato la mano di Dio by Paolo Sorrentino and Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti, followed by Mario Martone’s Qui rido io.
