According to tradition, the President of the Republic hosts at the Quirinale the candidates for the David di Donatello that will be awarded on May 3. Minister Franceschini: “We do not hide the critical issues, there is a real crisis in cinemas”.
The traditional invitation of the Quirinale to Italian cinema, on the eve of the David di Donatello awarded on May 3, live on Rai1 by Carlo Conti and Drusilla Foer, records two novelties: the live musical interlude with fragments of soundtracks played by the quartet of the pianist Rita Marcotulli, but above all the political slant of the intervention of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who spoke of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We need a law and more resources to modernize the rooms ».
Finally Franceschini recalled that state support for the sector has increased, “from 150 million in 2014 to 400 million in 2017, now almost 750 million euros go to the cinema”. The increase is naturally linked to the closure of cinemas caused by the pandemic over the past two years. The figures, and the comparison with other European countries, as the CEOs of Rai Cinema and Medusa Paolo Del Brocco and Giampaolo Letta recalled in an article in Corriere della Sera, are merciless: in 2021, Italian cinema has less than 7 percent compared to 2020, while France shows more 47.5 percent, Great Britain more 75 percent, Germany more twenty percent, Spain more 45 percent.
