Johnson & Johnson Expansion to Bring Hundreds of Jobs to Wilson, North Carolina

A multibillion-dollar investment by Johnson & Johnson will bring hundreds of new manufacturing jobs to Wilson, North Carolina, Governor John Stein announced on Friday. The expansion signifies a continued trend of growth in the state’s biopharmaceutical sector.

North Carolina is experiencing a surge in investment from the pharmaceutical giant, with billions already allocated to its Wilson facility and a plant in Holly Springs, initially unveiled in 2023 and expanded upon in August. This latest development underscores the company’s commitment to the region and its growing role in the life sciences industry.

The new factory will focus on the production of cancer drugs and other pharmaceutical products. While a specific opening date remains undisclosed, the governor characterized the project as a significant win for the state’s economic development efforts. “I appreciate Johnson & Johnson’s confidence that North Carolina is an ideal place to expand their business and create more good-paying jobs,” Stein said. “Life sciences leaders continue to select North Carolina because our skilled workforce and commitment to specialized training deliver the talent companies need to help patients in the United States and around the world.”

To support the influx of new positions, the state will contribute $12 million to a new training program at Wilson Community College. This initiative aims to equip local workers with the skills necessary to fill the specialized roles created by the expansion. The proposal has garnered bipartisan support from state legislators, including Senator Buck Newton and Representative Dante Pittman.

“North Carolina’s low tax environment and our investment in the BEST Center at the Wilson Community College continues to attract new, high paying jobs to the region,” Newton stated in a news release. Pittman echoed this sentiment, adding, “Johnson & Johnson’s continued investment in Wilson County is creating new pathways for our people to access high-value careers in the life sciences. This growth further underscores the need for workforce training initiatives.”

The timing of this announcement is particularly impactful given Wilson County’s economic landscape. Recent data reveals an unemployment rate of 4.9% in September, notably higher than the statewide average of 3.8%. The new jobs are expected to significantly alleviate this disparity and provide economic opportunities for residents.

This expansion by Johnson & Johnson is not merely a corporate investment; it’s a vote of confidence in North Carolina’s workforce and its potential to become a leading hub for biopharmaceutical innovation.
