Carson Cooper’s Assertiveness Fuels Michigan State’s Victory Over Northwestern

Michigan State continued its strong start to the season, defeating Northwestern 76-66 on Thursday night, largely thanks to the breakout performance of center Carson Cooper. The Spartans, now 14-2 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten play, saw Cooper deliver a career-high 18 points, nine rebounds, and a block, showcasing a newfound assertiveness that head coach Tom Izzo has been encouraging.

Cooper Steps Up for the Spartans

Four Michigan State players are currently averaging double-figure points, and Cooper is rapidly becoming a key contributor among them. The 6-foot-11 center, experiencing his first consistent starting role, is having his most impactful season to date. Against Northwestern, Cooper was remarkably efficient, making all six of his shot attempts and converting 6-of-8 free throws.

“[Izzo] wants me to be more assertive,” Cooper said. “He wants me to get more involved in the offense.” Clearly, the message resonated. After taking only one shot in Monday’s win over USC, Cooper actively sought opportunities against the Wildcats, demonstrating a clear understanding of his coach’s expectations. This increased aggression has translated into consistent production; he’s now reached double-figures in points in four of his last eight games, averaging 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting an impressive 55.6% from the field.

Overcoming a Second-Half Challenge

The game wasn’t without its challenges. Michigan State faced a second-half deficit before Cooper and his teammates rallied to secure the victory. The team’s ability to overcome adversity underscores their resilience and depth. The win keeps the Spartans firmly in contention within the Big Ten conference.
