Trump Faces GOP Backlash as DOJ Investigates Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell

Powell confirmed on Friday that the Federal Reserve received grand jury subpoenas coinciding with the DOJ’s investigation. “the threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President,” Powell claimed. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana defended Powell, stating he would be “stunned and shocked if he has done anything wrong.” he cautioned against accusations of perjury without concrete evidence, and likened the situation to “the Federal Reserve of the United States and the executive branch of the United States get[ting] into a p-ssing contest.” He concluded, “We don’t need it. We need it like we need a hole in our head. And everybody needs to take their meds and step back a little bit.”
Senator Susan Collins of Maine defended Powell’s integrity, suggesting the probe might be an attempt to assert control over the Federal Reserve. “The independence of the Federal Reserve is paramount and I support it,” she said.
Representative French Hill of Arkansas, who previously worked with Powell at the Treasury, affirmed Powell’s “man of integrity” character, despite policy disagreements. He warned that pursuing criminal charges over the renovation testimony was a “distraction” that could undermine sound monetary policy.
Representative Mike Lawler of New York, while disagreeing with some of Powell’s past decisions, firmly criticized the DOJ’s investigation, stating, “The independence of the Federal Reserve is paramount and I oppose any effort to pressure them into action.”
