Australian Government Approves Record Destruction of threatened Species Habitat in 2025
Habitat Loss-The Australian government authorized the destruction of 57,000 hectares of threatened species habitat in 2025,a 15-year high,according to the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF).
Scale of Destruction-The cleared area is more than double that approved in 2024 and over five times the amount in 2023, equaling roughly ten times the size of Sydney Harbour.
Key Species Impacted-The northern quoll suffered the most,with 7,643 hectares of its habitat cleared. forty-two new species were added to Australia’s extinction list this year.
Regional Focus- Ninety-eight percent of clearing occurred in Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales, largely driven by the mining industry.
Night Parrot-Habitat loss threatens the critically endangered night parrot, with approvals for clearing equivalent to six Sydney Airports’ worth of its remaining habitat.
New Legislation-Recent reforms require assessments for some agricultural clearing and near waterways. A new environmental protection agency will be established.
Government Response-The government says projects must now demonstrate a “net gain for nature” for approval, strengthening environmental protections.
