Canadian leaders deliberately scratched U.S. officials from the ceremony following trade escalations from Washington.

However, pressure from the White House shifted the financial architecture. Under a new agreement in principle, Canada agreed to make annual economic participation payments outside the original pact, routing 50 percent of net bridge and crossing-related revenues to a U.S.-controlled economic development fund for the first 15 fiscal years of operation, as detailed in the proposed agreement in principle.
The arrangement immediately sparked political fallout on both sides of the border. President Donald Trump took to social media during the opening ceremony to declare the original terms dead.

Dr. Murray Howe, the youngest son and a radiologist in Toledo, addressed the crowd of dignitaries by recalling a quiet moment in 2015 when he first showed his father architectural renderings of the Detroit River crossing.
