Canadian Animation Courts European Partnerships with “Québec-Canada Land in Europe” Initiative

A new initiative aims too bolster international co-production and showcase the growing strength of Québec and Canadian animation to European partners, launching during Cartoon Movie 2026 and Cartoon Forum 2026. The move underscores a commitment to fostering collaboration and opening doors for creators and industry professionals.
The Canadian animation industry, once largely focused on short films, has experienced significant growth since the early 2000s. This expansion was fueled by support from public institutions like SODEC and Telefilm Canada, enabling the production of internationally recognized feature films. Today, Canadian animated productions are regularly selected for prestigious festivals, demonstrating a remarkable rise in quality and storytelling.
A Legacy of Innovation
The roots of Canadian animation run deep, tracing back to pioneers like Norman McLaren and Frédéric Back in the 1960s. While emerging decades after the animation scenes in the United States and Japan, Canada has cultivated a unique artistic voice, blending technical skill with compelling narratives.
recent successes include allah Is Not Obliged, partially funded by Eurimages and showcased at the CINEMANIA Film Festival and the Festival international du cinéma francophone en acadie; and Endless Cookie, longlisted for the 2026 Oscars and selected for the Sundance Film Festival, International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, and DOK Leipzig.
These successes build upon a foundation of critically acclaimed films including When Adam Changes, Frog: the Brave Beluga, Felix and the Hidden Treasure, Snowtime!, Night of the zoopocalypse, Eternal Spring, and The breadwinner. Collectively, these films have been distributed in over 100 countries, a testament to the creative expertise of Québec and Canadian studios.
A New Chapter: québec and Canada at Cartoon Movie
For the first time, Québec and Canada will have a dedicated presence at Cartoon Movie, providing a crucial platform to strengthen existing relationships with European countries and forge new ones. The focus will be on co-production, with six projects – three from Québec and three from other Canadian provinces – being pitched to potential European partners.
An significant delegation comprised of producers, distributors, sales agents, editors, and broadcasters will be in attendance, actively seeking opportunities for collaboration. Attendees will also have the chance to explore potential partnerships through dedicated One-to-One Meetings during the event.
