Romania Braces for Prolonged Cold: Health Ministry Issues Urgent Safety Guidelines

The Romanian Ministry of Health is urging citizens to take precautions as a period of extremely low temperatures is expected to last until the end of February. Public health officials issued a series of recommendations on Tuesday, disseminated via Facebook, focusing on minimizing exposure to the cold, maintaining hygiene, and ensuring adequate nutrition.

Protecting Against the Elements

The Ministry’s primary concern is preventing frostbite and other cold-related illnesses. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel outdoors and limit prolonged exposure to the cold, particularly of the hands and feet. A senior official stated that individuals should “avoid traveling in open spaces and exposure to the cold,” emphasizing the severity of the current weather conditions.

To further mitigate risk, Romanians are encouraged to dress warmly, including wearing hats, gloves, scarves, and appropriate footwear. Avoiding humidity is also considered crucial.

Nutrition and Hygiene as Key Defenses

Beyond protective clothing, the Ministry highlighted the importance of bolstering the body’s natural defenses. Citizens are advised to consume foods rich in proteins, fruits, and vegetables to maintain optimal health during the cold snap. Conversely, alcohol consumption is discouraged.

Maintaining strict hygiene rules, particularly frequent handwashing with soap and water, is also paramount in preventing the spread of illness.

Vulnerable Populations Receive Specific Guidance

Special attention is being given to the protection of vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children. The Ministry emphasized that elderly individuals, especially those with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions, should avoid both travel and crowded places.

Regarding children, officials warned against leaving them unattended in parked cars and advised against lengthy journeys in unheated vehicles.

Healthcare System Preparedness

The Ministry of Health is actively monitoring the situation in hospitals throughout the country, working through the DSP (Directorate of Public Health) to ensure sufficient capacity for patient intake. County ambulance services are prepared to increase staffing and vehicle availability if necessary.

Carbon Monoxide Risk and Home Heating

With temperatures plummeting, the Ministry also issued a warning regarding home heating. Romanians are urged to ensure their homes are adequately heated but to avoid using improvised or unsafe heating installations to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) announced Tuesday morning that the cold period will extend until the end of February, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines.
