Nigerian content creator Esther Thomas,known to her nearly 500,000 followers as “Sunshine,” died on Jan. 9 after undergoing surgery to remove a fibroid,her family announced in an instagram statement. The tragic loss has sent ripples through Nigeria’s vibrant online community.
The family shared that Thomas “suddenly passed away,” adding they were “trying to put things in place so we could put her to rest.” The proclamation, posted Jan. 10, was met with an outpouring of grief and disbelief from fans and fellow creators.
A Sudden Illness and Complications After Surgery
What happened to Esther Thomas, the popular Nigerian content creator? Thomas began experiencing stomach pain on Dec. 28, which intensified into early january. After medical scans revealed a substantially enlarged fibroid, doctors recommended surgical removal. Collaborator Chidera Madu shared in a video that the initial operation was described as “successful,” but he believes complications arose afterward.
Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterus. While often asymptomatic, they can cause pain, heavy bleeding, and other complications, sometimes requiring surgical intervention.
Thomas gained popularity for her comedic skits and collaborative videos across Instagram and Facebook. She frequently partnered with other Nigerian internet personalities, including Ifedilimuo Ifeanyi Prosper and lucy before, creating content that resonated with a wide audience.
Tributes flooded the comments section of the family’s Instagram announcement. One close friend wrote,”Never in my wildest dream did I even think of typing (RIP) to my closest friend…that sunshine my friend cannot sing 🎶 happy birthday song to me today as usual 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 my whole day shattered waking up to such news.”
