A growing wave of discontent within the Conservative Party has culminated in another high-profile defection, as Andrew Rosindell, shadow minister for foreign affairs, announced his move to Reform UK. This latest departure adds significant momentum to Nigel Farage’s populist right-wing party and presents a fresh challenge for Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
Rosindell’s decision, revealed Sunday night, followed closely on the heels of Robert Jenrick’s exit just three days prior, further destabilizing the already embattled Tory party. The defection underscores the increasing appeal of Reform UK as a destination for Conservatives disillusioned with the current political landscape.
“He’s a fantastic MP, a grate patriot, and a great addition to our ranks,” his own website proclaims.
Rosindell joins a growing list of Tory MPs who have defected to Reform UK, including Lee Anderson and Danny Kruger. More than 20 former Conservative MPs – many having lost their seats in the 2024 election – have also made the switch, among them former cabinet ministers Nadhim Zahawi, Jake Berry, Nadine Dorries, and David Jones.
Chagos Islands Dispute Fuels Defection
The Romford MP, who has represented the constituency as 2001, explained his decision on social media platform X, citing a lifelong dedication to the Conservative party, inspired by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. However, he ultimately resigned over the party’s handling of the chagos Islands dispute.
“The failure of the Conservative party when in government and more recently in opposition to actively hold the government to account on the issue of Chagossian self-determination and the defense of British sovereignty represents a clear red line to me,” Rosindell stated. The Chagos Islands, home to the Diego Garcia air base in the Indian Ocean, are at the center of a sovereignty dispute with Mauritius.
Farage Welcomes Rosindell, But Limits Future Defections
While Farage had previously indicated that Reform UK would cease accepting Tory defectors after the local elections in May, stating his party was “not a rescue charity for every panicky Tory MP,” he made an exception for Rosindell. He lauded the MP as a “great patriot” and a “great addition” to Reform UK, asserting that “The Tories’ lies and hypocrisy over the Chagos Islands betrayal has tipped him over the edge, and we are delighted to welcome him to our ranks.”
Despite this, Reform UK currently enjoys a double-digit lead over both the Conservatives and Labor in recent opinion polls, suggesting a broader shift in public sentiment.
A Low-Profile Defection compared to Jenrick’s Shockwave
Rosindell’s departure is considered less impactful than that of Robert Jenrick, the former shadow justice secretary, whose defection last week sent shockwaves through Westminster. Jenrick had narrowly lost a leadership contest against Badenoch in 2024, making his move notably surprising.
Notably, in 2024, police concluded a rape and sexual assault examination against Rosindell, determining that the evidence did not meet the threshold for criminal prosecution following a “thorough investigation.” A spokesperson for the Romford MP at the time described him as “entirely exonerated” regarding allegations dating from 2002-2009.
Reactions from Across the Political Spectrum
The defection has elicited strong reactions from both sides of the political aisle. A Tory aide characterized Farage as undertaking “spring cleaning” for Badenoch by accepting Rosindell into Reform UK’s ranks. “The Conservative party supported Rosindell throughout his many troubles,and he’s responded by stabbing his friends,colleagues and activists in the back,” the aide stated. “Reform are welcome to him. We’re not going to be distracted from holding this disastrous Labour government to account.”
Anna Turley, chair of the Labour party, offered a scathing assessment, stating, “The stench of a failed and dying Tory party now engulfs Reform. The Conservatives left public services on their knees, and Nigel Farage is now unconditionally trying to rehabilitate their disastrous record.”
