Pompeo to Discuss New Memoir, US Foreign Policy in Ancona Appearance
Ancona, Italy is set to host a rare international event this Thursday, featuring former US Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo. The event, exclusively Italian, will center around the launch of Pompeo’s new memoir, ‘Never a Step Back – Fighting for the America I loved’, published by Liberilibri.
The meeting, scheduled for 10:30 am at the Mole Vanvitelliana, will see Pompeo in conversation with journalist Maurizio Molinari, who also penned the introductory essay for the volume. The event is free and open to the public, and will be introduced by lawyer Paolo Tanoni.
Pompeo served as a key figure in the Donald Trump administration, holding the positions of CIA Director and later, Secretary of State. During his tenure, he was described as the closest politician to the current president, navigating complex global challenges from Iran and North Korea to Russia, Israel, and the Arab world.
However, a central focus of his work, and detailed in ‘Never a Step Back’, was a significant shift in America’s relationship with China. According to the book’s publisher, Pompeo spearheaded a “generational transformation” in how the US approaches its primary geopolitical competitor. The memoir promises a behind-the-scenes look at the strategies employed, blending personal anecdotes with a rigorous analysis of recent history.
The author’s political actions were consistently guided by the principles of America’s founding fathers and his deeply held Christian faith, with a particular emphasis on promoting religious freedom globally. One analyst noted that Pompeo’s commitment to religious freedom is unparalleled in American diplomatic history.
Pompeo’s background is as diverse as the challenges he faced in public service. A Southern California native, he graduated first in his class from the West Point Military Academy in 1986, served as a cavalry officer, and later earned a degree from Harvard Law School. Before entering politics, he led two Kansas-based companies and served as a US Representative from 2011 to 2017.
‘Never a Step Back’ aims to provide insight into the rationale behind US foreign policy, characterized by a focus on military deterrence and economic and diplomatic pressure. Thursday’s event offers a unique opportunity to understand not only recent American history but also the complexities of the current international landscape, including ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and issues surrounding Venezuela and Greenland.
Notably, Pompeo has deep roots in Italy. His maternal grandmother, Fay Brandolino, was the daughter of Giuseppe Brandolino and Carmela Sanelli, who emigrated from Caramanico Terme, in the province of Pescara. This personal connection adds another layer of significance to his visit to Ancona.
The event promises to be a compelling discussion on the forces shaping the modern world, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of American power.
