SEATTLE, February 29, 2024 — Microsoft is shaking up its security leadership, bringing back a familiar face and refocusing a key executive on engineering quality. The moves, announced today by Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella in a message to employees, signal a continued emphasis on these critical areas for the tech giant.

New Leadership for Security and a Renewed Focus on Quality

Microsoft is bolstering its security team with a seasoned leader and shifting engineering priorities to enhance product durability.

  • Hayete Gallot is returning to Microsoft as Executive Vice President, Security.
  • Charlie Bell will transition to a new role concentrating on engineering quality.
  • Ales Holecek will serve as Chief Architect for Security, reporting to Gallot.

Nadella revealed that Hayete Gallot will rejoin Microsoft as Executive Vice President, Security, reporting directly to him. This appointment comes as Microsoft continues to build momentum in security, including advancements with Security Copilot agents and strong adoption of its Purview platform, as shared during last week’s quarterly earnings report. The company intends to capitalize on this progress.

Gallot previously served at Microsoft for over 15 years in engineering and sales leadership roles, contributing to the development of Windows and Office and the design of the Security Solution Area. Most recently, she was President, Customer Experience for Google Cloud. Nadella emphasized Gallot’s ability to combine product development with delivering value for customers as a key asset.

What does this mean for Microsoft’s security posture? The addition of Gallot, a veteran with deep Microsoft roots and recent experience at a major competitor, suggests a commitment to aggressive innovation and customer-centric security solutions.

Alongside the security leadership change, Charlie Bell will move into a new role focused on engineering quality. This transition, planned in collaboration with Nadella, allows Bell to return to his passion for hands-on engineering work. He previously built Microsoft’s Security, Compliance, Identity, and Management organization and spearheaded the Secure Future Initiative.

Bell will collaborate with Scott Guthrie and Mala Anand on the Quality Excellence Initiative, which aims to increase accountability and accelerate progress toward engineering objectives, ensuring the delivery of high-quality experiences at a global scale. Ales Holecek will take on the role of Chief Architect for Security, reporting to Gallot, bringing his expertise in platform architecture and development to the security team.

The changes align with a new operating rhythm involving commercial cohorts, with Hayete and her team now responsible for security product rhythms as part of this process. Nadella expressed his excitement about welcoming Gallot back to Microsoft and his gratitude for Bell’s contributions to the company’s security business.
