A collaborative effort between the Transfusion Center of the Valencian Community, the Callosa de Segura Town Hall, and the Red Cross is urging residents to donate blood on Monday, February 9th, from 4:45 PM to 8:30 PM at the Callosa de Segura Social Center (Carmen García Sorribes Street, 9, next to the Glorieta Garden). This critical appeal comes as hospitals in the Alicante province face a consistent need for approximately 250 units of blood daily.
Maintaining Vital Blood Reserves
The Transfusion Center emphasizes the importance of maintaining sufficient blood reserves to ensure the proper functioning of hospital blood banks. “People need transfusions for life,” a senior official stated, highlighting the ongoing and often lifelong need for blood products for individuals battling cancer, recovering from emergencies, undergoing scheduled surgeries, or experiencing complications during childbirth.
Who Can Donate?
To be eligible to donate, individuals must meet specific criteria. Donors must be between 18 and 65 years of age, weigh more than 50 kilograms (approximately 110 pounds), and be well-hydrated. It is recommended to increase fluid intake during the 24 hours prior to donation and to avoid donating on an empty stomach. Donors must also be in good health and present identification.
The Lifesaving Impact of a Single Donation
Blood donation is a completely anonymous, selfless act that provides a vital gift to recipients. Every donation contributes to a sustainable supply of blood and blood products, ensuring timely treatment for patients in need. The need for blood is constant, and there is currently no artificial way to manufacture it.
According to a release from the Transfusion Center, “No donation, no transfusion. It’s a simple act and insurance for the giving and anyone can leave a solidarity footprint, donating blood.” The organizations involved are particularly focused on bolstering reserves during the summer months, when donation rates often decline.
Cultivating a Culture of Donation
Efforts are also underway to educate younger generations about the importance of blood donation, fostering a sense of solidarity and normalizing this life-saving practice. One analyst noted that promoting regular donation is crucial for maintaining a consistent and reliable blood supply. The act of donating blood is described as “the most generous act what can be done and what costs less.”
Donations of blood are a constant need and contribute directly to saving lives. For more information, please visit the Transfusion Center website or contact them by phone at 965 16 97 10.
