James Van Der Beek, ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star, Dies at 48 After Cancer Battle

The actor, best known for his role as Dawson Leery, passed away peacefully this morning, February 11, his family announced, following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

The family shared the news via a social media post, stating, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” They requested privacy as they grieve, adding, “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Van Der Beek publicly revealed his diagnosis in November 2024, sharing with People magazine, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” but also expressing optimism, stating, “there’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.” He was initially diagnosed in the latter half of 2023.

Born James David Van Der Beek on March 10, 1975, the actor rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s, becoming a teen idol through his portrayal of Dawson Leery in the hit series Dawson’s Creek. The show, created by Kevin Williamson, captivated audiences with its portrayal of a group of close-knit high school friends in Capeside, Massachusetts, running from 1998 to 2003 and drawing over 6 million viewers at its peak. Van Der Beek reflected on the show’s impact on his life, noting that it changed his life “instantly” after years of auditioning and striving for a breakthrough.

Alongside co-stars Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams, Van Der Beek became a household name. At the height of his fame, he was even recognized as one of People magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful People in the World’. A charity reunion of Dawson’s Creek was organized following his diagnosis, though Van Der Beek’s health prevented his participation; Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read lines with the cast.

Prior to Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek appeared in the popular film Varsity Blues alongside Paul Walker. He also took on the role of Sean Bateman in The Rules of Attraction, a character connected to the world of American Psycho. Later in his career, he embraced diverse roles, including a fictionalized version of himself in the television series Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and a stint on the 28th season of Dancing with the Stars. He recently made a guest appearance in the Prime Video comedy, Overcompensating.

Tributes have begun pouring in on social media, with actor Sarah Michelle Gellar expressing her sorrow, writing, “I’m so sad for your beautiful family. While James legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world. Fuck Cancer.”

James Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
