Officer’s Gesture of Respect Captures Hearts as Buddhist Monks Complete Historic Walk for Peace
A moving display of interfaith connection unfolded in Washington, D.C., as a Metropolitan Police Department officer warmly welcomed a group of Buddhist monks who concluded a remarkable 2,300-mile Walk for Peace from Texas. The event, which occurred on Tuesday, has resonated widely, highlighting a powerful message of unity and mutual respect.
A 15-Week Journey to the Nation’s Capital
The monks undertook a grueling 108-day journey, walking single file and maintaining a deliberate pace – one step at a time – for 15 weeks. Their pilgrimage culminated as they crossed the Potomac River, symbolizing a passage toward peace and understanding. The dedication and perseverance of the monks drew attention from across the country, culminating in a heartfelt reception in the nation’s capital.
An Unscripted Moment of Connection
Officer Steven Nguyen of the MPD’s Asian Liaison Unit was among those awaiting the monks’ arrival. The 25-year veteran of the force emphasized that his now-viral interaction was entirely spontaneous. “First, it’s really hard for me to explain that,” Nguyen said. “But for me, I feel like my mind is very peaceful. And, I mean, it’s really hard to explain, like I said, but I love it.”
He greeted the monks with a traditional bow, a gesture of profound respect, while still in full police uniform, complete with vest and weapon. He also presented them with flowers, further demonstrating his sincere welcome. “For me, bowing to that person, we show respect and thank you,” Nguyen explained. He elaborated, stating, “Usually, we show our heart to them, that we respect them, and show our love to them.”
Extending Support Across Capitol Hill
Officer Nguyen continued to accompany the monks on Wednesday, guiding them as they traversed Capitol Hill. This ongoing support underscored a broader theme of collaboration and understanding. “We come together, regardless. Any type of religion,” Nguyen stated. “Regardless any race, we come together, and that I’ve never seen before in my life.”
A Nationwide Expression of Solidarity
The support extended beyond the MPD, with law enforcement agencies across the nation offering gestures of solidarity to the monks. Many officers presented the monks with their badges, which the monks now proudly wear as symbols of connection and shared purpose. “All the law enforcement support them and love them, and I wish, like, we can love each other like that,” Nguyen said. “You know, like I say from the beginning, regardless, you know, your race, your faith, everything,” he added, expressing a hopeful vision for a more unified future. “I’m so happy with that.”
