The last time the U.S. men’s hockey team struck Olympic gold was in 1980 during the “Miracle on Ice,” but this year’s squad, assembled for the games in Italy, is poised to potentially end that 46-year drought.
A Roster Stacked with NHL Talent
For the first time since 2014, the world’s best hockey players from the NHL will compete on the Olympic stage.
This year’s American team boasts arguably its most talented roster ever, though they’ll face a formidable challenge from rivals Canada, as well as strong contenders like Sweden and Finland. Auston Matthews will captain the team, with Matthew Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy serving as alternate captains. Three-time Vezina Trophy winner and reigning MVP Connor Hellebuyck will be the starting goaltender, supported by Norris Trophy candidates Quinn Hughes and Zach Werenski on the blue line.
What are Team USA’s chances of winning gold? They are considered one of the favorites, second only to Canada, after defeating the Canadians in the 4 Nations Face-Off last year, despite a subsequent loss in the championship game.
The Americans will kick off the preliminary round against Latvia on Thursday, followed by matchups against Denmark and Germany before the knockout stage begins.
