Boil Water Notice Issued for Christchurch Suburbs Following Bacteria Detection

A public health alert is in effect for residents in several eastern Christchurch suburbs after the detection of bacteria in the Rawhiti water supply. The Christchurch City Council issued an emergency mobile alert shortly before 1 p.m. local time on Thursday, advising approximately 30,000 residents to boil all drinking water until further notice.

Public Health Risk Identified

The alert encompasses the areas of New Brighton, Burwood, Wainoni, Aranui, and Southshore. According to the council, testing revealed the presence of bacteria, rendering the water unsafe for consumption without boiling. “All people in the Rawhiti water supply zone…are advised to BOIL ALL DRINKING WATER until further notice,” the alert stated.

Strict Boiling Guidelines

Residents are instructed to boil water for a minimum of one minute for all uses, including:

  • Drinking
  • Preparing food
  • Making baby formula, juices, and ice
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Brushing teeth
  • Other cooking needs

The council specifically cautioned against relying on “’instant’ boil water systems,” as they may not reach a sufficient temperature to eliminate the bacteria. However, jugs with automatic cut-off switches are acceptable, provided they are filled to capacity. Residents should avoid repeatedly activating the switch to extend boiling time.

Investigation Underway

Staff and contractors are currently conducting further testing and investigations to pinpoint the source of the contamination. A senior official stated that the boil water notice will remain in effect until more information becomes available and the water supply is confirmed safe.

The situation underscores the importance of proactive water quality monitoring and rapid response to potential public health threats. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for updates and further guidance.
