SARASOTA, Fla. – Battling wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team completed 36 holes at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational on Sunday at Palm Aire Country Club (par 72, 6,191 yards). While a strong start positioned them near the top of the leaderboard, the Wildcats finished the day in eighth place overall. The tournament, hosted by Michigan State, continues Monday with a final round of play.
Kentucky began the invitational strongly, tied for first place after the opening 18 holes at 8-over par. But, challenging conditions in the afternoon led to a more difficult second round, dropping them to 37-over through 36 holes. Northwestern currently leads the competition at 24-over, followed by Oklahoma (+26), a tie between Michigan and Maryland (+31), and Ohio State (+32). Kentucky remains within striking distance, just five shots behind the top five.
The Wildcats showcased impressive individual performances throughout the day. Sophomore C.A. Carter, a Lexington, Kentucky native, contributed an eagle during the first round, alongside a total of 18 birdies from the entire team. Karlie Campbell led the team with five birdies, and all five Kentucky golfers recorded a birdie on the par-5, 480-yard No. 11 hole. Cathryn Brown paced the team in the first round with a 1-under score, while Samantha Paradise (+2), Campbell (+3), and Carter (+4) also contributed to the team total.
The afternoon round proved more challenging as the wind intensified. While the Wildcats managed 12 birdies, they also encountered more bogeys. Brown continued to lead Kentucky, though her score increased to 6-over in the second round. She added another eagle on the par-5 No. 11, and Anastasia Hekkonen also achieved an eagle on the same hole, finishing at 7-over for the round. Carter also carded a 7-over, while Campbell and Paradise both finished at 9-over.
Cathryn Brown’s consistent play extends a notable streak: she has now contributed to the team total in 20 consecutive rounds, a run that began last season. Brown is currently tied for 11th place individually at 5-over par. Carter and Paradise are tied for 34th at 11-over, Campbell is tied for 42nd at 12-over, and Hekkonen is tied for 54th at 15-over.
