MISSOULA – The United States men’s hockey team has reclaimed Olympic gold, defeating rival Canada 1-0 in overtime Sunday at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. The victory, secured by a goal from New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes at 1:41 of the extra period, marks the first Olympic gold medal for the U.S. Men’s hockey team since the famed “Miracle on Ice” triumph in 1980 at Lake Placid.
Among those celebrating the historic win is Whitefish, Montana native Jake Sanderson, a defenseman who played a key role in the team’s undefeated run through the tournament. Sanderson, participating in his second Olympic Games, appeared in all six games as the Americans finished with a perfect 6-0 record, ending a 46-year gold medal drought. The team’s dominant performance included a decisive 5-1 victory over Germany in the preliminary rounds.
A Perfect Run to Gold
The gold medal game was a tightly contested affair, with both teams showcasing strong defensive play. Sanderson, known for his defensive prowess and skating ability, contributed to the Americans’ ability to stifle Canada’s offensive threats. Throughout the tournament, Sanderson registered two assists and a plus/minus of -1, logging 10 shots on goal. His assists came during the preliminary round win against Germany.
During the second period of the gold medal game, Sanderson created a scoring chance with a shot from the left dot that narrowly missed the net. He also played a crucial role on the penalty kill, helping the U.S. Maintain a perfect record of 17-for-17 on the penalty kill throughout the entire Olympic tournament.
Sanderson’s Journey to the Olympic Stage
Sanderson’s path to Olympic gold began in Whitefish, Montana, where he developed his skills playing youth hockey. He later honed his game at the University of North Dakota before being selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2022. His inclusion on the U.S. Olympic team underscores the growing talent pipeline in American hockey and the impact of players from smaller communities.
A Historic Victory for U.S. Hockey
The victory over Canada is particularly significant given the historical rivalry between the two nations in men’s hockey. The 1980 “Miracle on Ice” remains one of the most iconic moments in American sports history and this gold medal win represents a new chapter in that storied rivalry. The U.S. Team’s success in Milan is expected to inspire a new generation of hockey players across the country.
