The George Mason University Patriots concluded a strong showing at the 2026 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia, securing medals in 10 events. The competition, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, saw standout performances from athletes like Kailynn Tyson and Jayden Smith, contributing to the men’s team finishing second overall and the women’s team placing fourth. The success at the A-10 championships signals a positive trajectory for the Patriots as they prepare for the outdoor season, which begins March 20th.

Kailynn Tyson led the charge for the Patriots, winning gold in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.55 meters. This victory highlighted a weekend of impressive field performances for George Mason. On the track, Jayden Smith matched his own meet record in the men’s 60m hurdles, finishing with a time of 7.77 seconds to claim the conference title. These individual successes were key components of the team’s overall performance at the championships.

Patriots Dominate on the Track and in the Field

Beyond Tyson and Smith, several other Patriots delivered crucial performances. Ella Semple secured her second Atlantic 10 crown of the weekend, winning the women’s 3000m in 9:29.85. The race was a thrilling contest, with Semple edging out Loyola’s Roisin Treacy, who had been the season-long conference rankings leader, in a close finish. In the men’s pentathlon, Nicholas DeWolfe earned a silver medal, compiling 5002 points across the final three events, including a win in the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters.

Record-Breaking Performances and Relay Success

Caleb Hymans delivered one of the most notable performances of the day, breaking the meet record in the men’s 1000m with a personal-best time of 2:24.32 to secure a silver medal. He continued his success later in the competition as a member of the men’s 4x800m relay team, which earned a bronze medal with a time of 7:39.31, alongside Nadim Abdu, Jonathan Regules, and Messiah McKinley. The men’s 4x400m relay team also contributed to the medal count, securing silver with a time of 3:14.06, thanks to the efforts of Aidan Walcott, Joziah Johnson, Lance Koontz, and Jordan Tuck.

Individual Brilliance and Team Spirit

Lance Koontz added to the Patriots’ success with an individual bronze medal in the men’s 500m, achieving a personal-best time of 1:04.88. Helena Santacana mirrored this achievement on the women’s side, also claiming bronze in the 500m with a personal-best time of 1:15.69. Mason Samuels rounded out the individual medalists, earning bronze in the men’s 60m. These individual accomplishments underscored the depth of talent within the George Mason track and field program.

The George Mason men’s team finished second overall with 112 points, trailing only the five-time reigning indoor champion, Rhode Island. The women’s team secured a fourth-place finish with 82 points. Head Coach Andrew Gerard praised the team’s resilience and performance throughout the challenging championship meet. “We scrapped both days,” Gerard said, “We ended up higher than we anticipated and with a significant jump in points from what we projected on paper.” He emphasized the program’s culture and championship expectations, stating, “I was really proud of how people responded. People stepped up. We got point production from a lot of places that we didn’t expect. We prepare ourselves as a championship-level team every year, and they performed like one. We stepped up at the championship, and that’s all you can ask.”

Looking ahead, Gerard believes the momentum generated at the indoor championships will carry forward into the outdoor season. “Our sport is fairly unique in that we have multiple championships in the same academic year, so we turn around in two months and do this again,” he explained. “We’re in a good position going into outdoors.” The Patriots will open their outdoor season at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge in High Point, North Carolina, from Friday, March 20 to Saturday, March 21.

The George Mason track and field program’s performance at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships demonstrates its continued growth and competitiveness within the conference. With a strong foundation of individual talent and a resilient team spirit, the Patriots are poised for continued success as they transition to the outdoor season.
