Steiermark Celebrates St. Joseph’s Day: Regional Holiday & Events

by Ethan Brooks

GRAZ, Austria – The Steiermark region marked its annual Landesfeiertag, or state holiday, on Friday with a renewed focus on preserving and celebrating its cultural traditions. A central event was a reception hosted by Governor Mario Kunasek at the Aula der Alten Universität in Graz, bringing together regional leaders, government officials, and employees of the state with names associated with the holiday – Josef, Josefine, or Josefa. The initiative, dubbed “Steirer feiern – Josefitag(e) in der Steiermark,” aims to revitalize awareness of Josefitag and its significance to Steiermark’s identity.

The Josefitag, dedicated to Saint Joseph, has been the patron saint of Styria since 1772, a connection Governor Kunasek emphasized during the reception. “The Josefitag is more than just a day on the calendar – We see a piece of Styrian identity,” Kunasek said, according to a statement released by the state government. “The event format ‘Steirer feiern – Josefitag(e) in der Steiermark’ shows that our traditions are alive and our traditions are carried on and lived by young people as well as future generations.” This year’s celebration included numerous events throughout the region, designed to engage residents of all ages in the traditions of Josefitag.

The reception saw attendance from key figures in Steiermark’s government, including Landtagspräsident Gerald Deutschmann, third Landtagspräsidentin Helga Ahrer, Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreterin Manuela Khom, Landesrätin Claudia Holzer, and Landesräte Hannes Amesbauer, Stefan Hermann, and Karlheinz Kornhäusl. Representatives from the state’s personnel department and members of the Landespersonalvertretung also attended, highlighting the broad support for the initiative. The focus on state employees bearing the names Josef, Josefine, or Josefa underscored the personal connection to the holiday for many within the region.

A Tradition Rooted in Styrian Values

Beyond the festivities, officials stressed the deeper meaning of Josefitag for the Steiermark region. Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreterin Manuela Khom connected the holiday to the core values that have shaped the region’s success. “The Josefitag symbolically represents the values of Styrian women and men who have made our country great: diligence, cohesion and innovative strength,” Khom stated. “These values are the reason why Styria is such a successful location today. And they are also the foundation for a strong future for our Styria.”

The emphasis on these values – community, responsibility, and solidarity – resonated throughout the event. Georg Pessler, Obmann der Landespersonalvertretung, highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the celebration. “The initiative for this reception fills us with great joy,” Pessler said. “The fact that politics, leaders of the state, members of the personnel representation and state employees who celebrate their name day today come together to celebrate the state holiday speaks for the good cooperation. The Styrian social partnership stands – as you can see – for dialogue and striving for the best solutions for the country of Styria.”
