As teenagers increasingly turn to artificial intelligence for assistance with schoolwork, a growing number are likewise seeking guidance from AI on a deeply personal matter: dieting and weight loss. This trend is raising concerns among doctors and parents, who caution that health advice generated by AI can be inaccurate and potentially dangerous for adolescents.
The potential for harm stems from the fact that AI algorithms, while powerful, lack the nuanced understanding of individual health needs that a qualified medical professional possesses. Teenagers, navigating the complexities of puberty and body image, may be particularly vulnerable to accepting AI-generated recommendations as fact, without critical evaluation. The rise of AI-powered chatbots and readily available online tools has made this access to potentially flawed information easier than ever.
The Risks of Unverified Advice
“As a mother and a clinician and a professor, it’s actually quite frightening,” said Jaquay Brister, a parent in Memphis, Tennessee. “AI, it’s a system, it is a tool. It doesn’t really know anything about you or your family history, so it is limiting information that you are getting from it.” This lack of personalization is a key concern. AI algorithms often rely on broad datasets, potentially drawing conclusions based on adult nutritional needs or information from unreliable sources.
Jay Lattimore, a Memphis resident, echoed this sentiment, expressing worry that young people may place undue trust in AI responses. “It’s really scary to witness when people are taking advice like it is gospel when it’s not sourced or cited or even correct,” Lattimore said. He pointed to the existing problem of misinformation spreading rapidly among children through platforms like TikTok and Instagram, suggesting that AI could exacerbate this issue.
Teen Nutritional Needs and the Dangers of Restriction
Dr. Michelle Bowden, a pediatrician and medical director of the eating disorder services program at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, isn’t surprised that teens are turning to AI for weight loss advice. “I don’t feel surprised that they’re going to AI when they’re thinking about how can I lose some weight or what is a healthy diet, or how can I build muscle,” she explained. However, she is deeply concerned about the tendency of teens to accept AI-generated information without question.
“Often the information that teens secure back from AI, they accept as fact,” Dr. Bowden said. “What we know about the way AI works is that it uses everything it can find on the internet, which means that some of the things it may find may not be helpful information.” She explained that AI-generated diet plans frequently rely on adult data or advice from individuals without medical or nutritional credentials. This is particularly problematic for teenagers, whose nutritional requirements are significantly different due to the physiological changes associated with puberty and varying activity levels.
“Teenagers do not have the same nutritional needs as adults do,” Dr. Bowden emphasized. “When you’re a teenager, you’re going through puberty. That increases your nutritional needs.” She specifically cited the danger of extremely low-calorie diets, such as those recommending 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day, which can lead to severe malnutrition. The consequences of such restriction can be serious, including slow digestion, nausea, constipation, low blood sugar, and, in severe cases, dangerously low heart rates requiring hospitalization.
From Dieting to Disordered Eating
Dr. Bowden also highlighted the potential for restrictive eating patterns to escalate into full-blown eating disorders. “We see patients who start off choosing healthy diets because they’ve gotten the diet recommended from something like AI, from the internet, from somewhere else,” she said. “Then they get more and more restrictive over time. Those patients show up months later with anorexia.” Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is seeing an increasing number of patients who are using AI to calculate calories, analyze food nutritional value, or request weight-loss meal plans.
“Those are all the kind of things that we’re seeing reach in,” Dr. Bowden said. “It can be inappropriate, if not wildly incorrect.” She noted that even seemingly harmless actions, like tracking calories with AI-powered apps, can become obsessive and contribute to unhealthy relationships with food.
Recognizing the Warning Signs and Seeking Professional Help
Parents should be vigilant for warning signs that their teen may be relying on AI for dieting advice, including a sudden elimination of previously enjoyed foods or an excessive focus on food choices that impacts social activities. Dr. Bowden stressed the importance of open communication and emphasized that online tools can never replace the personalized guidance of a medical professional.
“Anything you found on the internet is not the same as what you get from human interaction,” Dr. Bowden said. “Your doctor or your dietitian is going to be able to take your exact phase of life, your exact activity level, your exact size and shape and help give you the advice for the nutrition that you need.” She encouraged families to prioritize consultations with qualified healthcare providers for any concerns related to nutrition or weight management.
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers resources on healthy weight and nutrition for teens, emphasizing a holistic approach that focuses on overall well-being rather than restrictive dieting.
As AI continues to evolve and become more integrated into daily life, it’s crucial for both parents and teenagers to approach AI-generated health advice with a healthy dose of skepticism and prioritize the expertise of qualified medical professionals. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital plans to expand its educational outreach programs to address the growing use of AI in adolescent health decisions, with the first workshops scheduled for early next year.
