Hundreds of Animals Rescued in LA County Animal Welfare Raid

by Sofia Alvarez

Hundreds of dogs and cats were rescued Friday from a property in the Lake Hughes community, a rural area in the Antelope Valley, following a search warrant served at an animal rescue facility. Los Angeles County authorities initially described the seizure as the largest in their history, but later revised the estimate downward. The operation highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and overcrowding at rescue facilities.

Investigators searched Rock N Pawz, located on 266th Street West, at approximately 7 a.m. On Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. What began as a reported estimate of around 700 animals was later clarified to more than 300 – 250 dogs and 66 cats – though officials cautioned that the number remains preliminary as a thorough evaluation of the animals continues. The Department of Animal Care and Control emphasized that the seizure stemmed from a reported violation of animal welfare laws.

The District Attorney’s Office assisted in serving the warrant, prompted by allegations of animal cruelty specifically related to neglect due to overcrowding. While the investigation is ongoing, no arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed at this time. Authorities have not released details regarding the specific conditions the animals were found in, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The Rescue Operation and Animal Care

The scale of the rescue required a significant coordinated effort. More than 70 staff members from the Department of Animal Care and Control were on scene Friday, supported by personnel from spcaLA, Pasadena Humane and Kern County Animal Services. Aerial images captured by CBS Los Angeles showed kennels both occupied and empty, along with stacked food bowls, offering a glimpse into the scope of the operation. Veterinary medical staff immediately began providing care to the animals. Those requiring urgent medical attention were transported to local veterinary hospitals. The remaining animals are being transferred to Los Angeles County animal care centers for further assessment and ongoing care. The Department of Animal Care and Control is requesting public assistance to create space at the care centers, and they will be open from 11 a.m. To 5 p.m. On Sunday to facilitate this. More information about Sunday’s opening can be found on the Department’s Facebook page.

Community Response and How to Help

County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, whose district includes Lake Hughes, described the situation as “heartbreaking” in a statement. “Every step is being taken to ensure these animals receive the treatment and compassion they deserve,” Barger said. She also emphasized that a court order is necessary before the animals can be made available for adoption, and her office is working with the judicial system to expedite the process.

The Department of Animal Care and Control is actively seeking public support. Individuals can help by clearing space at the county care centers to accommodate the influx of rescued animals. Financial donations to the L.A. County Animal Care Foundation are also being accepted to support the ongoing care of the animals. You can donate to the L.A. County Animal Care Foundation here. Information on adopting an animal can be found on the Department’s website. Learn more about the adoption process here.

This large-scale animal rescue underscores the importance of responsible animal welfare practices and the challenges faced by rescue organizations. The investigation into the conditions at Rock N Pawz is ongoing, and the focus remains on providing the best possible care for the rescued animals. The Department of Animal Care and Control will provide updates as the investigation progresses and the animals become available for adoption.

The next update from the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control regarding the status of the animals and the ongoing investigation is expected early next week. The Department encourages anyone with information related to this case to contact them directly.
