This terminology is used in official fireball reports to describe the descent of these space rocks.

This event follows closely on the heels of another significant fireball observed over Ohio on March 17. That meteor was considerably larger, approximately six feet in diameter and weighing around seven tons, and originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, according to NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The Ohio event also resulted in the potential recovery of meteorite fragments.

Houston vs. Ohio: A Matter of Scale

While both events involved fireballs entering the Earth’s atmosphere, there were notable differences in scale. The Ohio meteor was significantly larger – nearly six feet across and weighing approximately seven tons – compared to the roughly three-foot, one-ton meteor that caused the sonic boom in Texas. The larger size and mass of the Ohio meteor contributed to a more dramatic visual display and a greater likelihood of meteorite recovery.

The unusual celestial event coincides with a developing heat dome over the western United States, poised to bring potentially record-breaking temperatures to Texas. Saturday marked one of the warmest days of the year so far in Houston, and the forecast indicates a continued warming trend throughout the week. The average high temperature for March in Houston is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperatures are expected to soar well above that as the heat dome strengthens.
