The demanding work of caring for pigs carries hidden health risks for those who do it, according to research presented at the 2025 Leman Swine Conference. A recent study focusing on swine workers in the Midwest revealed a surprisingly high prevalence of both respiratory and skin conditions, highlighting the demand for a more comprehensive understanding of occupational exposures in this essential agricultural sector. The findings underscore the importance of prioritizing worker health and safety within the swine industry, an area often overshadowed by production demands.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota conducted a phone survey of 49 swine workers across farms in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. The study, part of a larger investigation into the swine worker microbiome, aimed to characterize the various exposures – both on and off the farm – that might impact their health. Participants had to have been employed on a farm for at least three months, be between the ages of 18 and 60, and have no recent history of hospitalization, antibiotic use, or immunosuppression to qualify for the study. This careful selection process aimed to isolate the effects of occupational exposure as much as possible.
The survey revealed that 12% of workers reported experiencing allergies or sinus problems, even as another 12% reported a cough or sore throat. Infections of the eye, ear, nose, or throat were also common, affecting 10% of respondents. Beyond respiratory issues, skin conditions were also frequently reported. Six percent of workers experienced eczema, skin rashes, or allergic reactions to latex or nitrile gloves – common protective materials used in farm work. A minor percentage reported allergies to common substances like lactose, penicillin, and metamizole.
A Diverse Workforce Facing Unique Challenges
The study participants represented a diverse group. While 65% identified as male, a significant 84% were Spanish speakers, reflecting the demographics of the agricultural workforce in the region. The average age was 35.5 years, and notably, a substantial 63% had earned a college degree, with an additional 6% holding graduate degrees. This challenges the common perception of agricultural work as requiring limited formal education. The high level of education among these workers suggests a dedicated workforce, potentially facing barriers to applying their skills in other sectors.
Beyond the farm, the workers’ lives also presented potential exposure factors. The average household included two adults and one child, and nearly half (45%) lived with another person also working with animals. 43% had daily contact with pets like dogs, and cats. While these exposures are generally considered benign, they contribute to the complex interplay of factors influencing worker health. Around 16% of the surveyed workers were smokers, averaging 46 cigarettes per week, and 13% were currently taking medication for a chronic health condition.
The Daily Grind: Exposure and Protective Measures
The nature of the work itself presents significant exposure risks. On average, workers had been involved in swine production for nine years, physically handling approximately 605 pigs over a six-hour workday. The most frequent tasks included performing euthanasia (94%), housekeeping in non-pig areas (93%), and directly examining, diagnosing, or treating swine (90%). Less common tasks included working with very young piglets (61%), collecting biological samples (55%), and administrative work (39%).
While the work is physically demanding and involves close contact with animals, the study also examined the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The majority (77%) consistently used disposable gloves, but the use of safety glasses or goggles was lower at 22%, and face masks were used by only 10% of workers. Importantly, all participants adhered to the standard practice of showering both before and after entering the pig facilities, and reported washing their hands an average of six times per day while on the farm. These hygiene practices are crucial in minimizing the spread of pathogens, but the relatively low use of eye and respiratory protection suggests a potential area for improvement.
Looking Ahead: A Call for Further Research
The University of Minnesota study provides a valuable snapshot of the health landscape for swine workers in the Midwest. It highlights the complex interplay of occupational and non-occupational exposures, and the need for a more nuanced understanding of the factors influencing worker well-being. The researchers emphasize that this study is a starting point, summarizing a broad set of exposures and calling for additional investigation into specific health outcomes. Further research could explore the link between specific job tasks and reported health conditions, as well as the effectiveness of different PPE strategies.
Understanding the health risks faced by swine workers is not only a matter of worker safety, but also a critical component of ensuring a sustainable and resilient agricultural system. As the demand for pork products continues to grow, protecting the health of those who produce it is paramount. The findings from this study serve as a crucial reminder that a healthy workforce is essential for a healthy food supply.
