A delay in reporting a potential meningitis outbreak by an NHS trust in Kent may have hampered early intervention efforts, according to a report and statements from health officials. The East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust waited two days after a patient presented with symptoms to alert the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), a delay officials now acknowledge could have allowed for a faster response, including preventative antibiotic distribution.
The outbreak, which has tragically resulted in the deaths of two students – 18-year-traditional Juliette Kenny and a student at the University of Kent – has prompted a large-scale vaccination and antibiotic distribution program. As of Monday, March 25th, 2024, 20 cases of meningitis have been confirmed in the Kent area, with a further three still under investigation, bringing the total to 23, The Guardian reported. Dr. Des Holden, the acting chief executive of East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust, conceded that officials “recognise there was an opportunity prior to diagnosis to notify UKHSA.”
