A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea region of Indonesia early Thursday, triggering tsunami warnings across a wide swathe of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The quake, initially reported as magnitude 7.8 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), rattled communities and prompted evacuations as authorities assessed the risk of dangerous waves. The earthquake struck at approximately 3:03 AM local time, with an epicenter located 127 kilometers (79 miles) west-northwest of Ternate, Indonesia, at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles), according to the USGS. The immediate impact was felt in North Sulawesi province, where an Agence France-Presse journalist in Manado reported being jolted awake and witnessing residents, including schoolchildren, rushing outdoors. “I immediately woke up and left my house. People [were] immediately scrambling outside,” the journalist said. “There is a school and the pupils rushed outside.” While the shaking was prolonged, initial reports indicated no significant structural damage in Manado.
Tsunami Warnings and Potential Impacts
Following the earthquake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for several countries, warning of potential tsunami waves within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter. The most immediate concern is for coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, where waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meter (approximately 1 to 3.2 feet) above tide levels are possible. Further afield, the warning system also predicted waves of less than 30 centimeters (approximately 1 foot) above tide level for Guam, Japan, Papua Recent Guinea, Taiwan, and other areas in the region. Japan’s meteorological agency stated that “slight sea level changes” might occur along its coast, but no tsunami damage is expected. Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands, or territories.
