Artemis II Launches: Humanity Returns to Lunar Orbit After 50 Years

The last time humans ventured beyond low Earth orbit was December 1972, with the Apollo 17 mission. For over fifty years, space exploration had remained largely confined to our planet’s immediate vicinity. That changed Saturday evening, as a new chapter in lunar exploration began. At 6:35 PM Eastern Time (12:35 AM in Italy), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Space Launch System rocket lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen aboard the Orion spacecraft.

The mission, dubbed Artemis II, is a ten-day journey that won’t land on the Moon, but will orbit it, carrying the crew over 252,000 miles from Earth – farther than any human has traveled before. This surpasses the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970, a mission famously forced to abort its landing and return home. The launch marks a significant step in NASA’s ambitious Artemis program, aiming to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon and eventually, Mars.

A Flight of Firsts

Artemis II is notable for breaking several barriers. Victor Glover will become the first African American to travel to deep space, while Christina Koch will be the first woman to do so. Jeremy Hansen represents another milestone as the first non-American to participate in a lunar mission. The historic launch drew congratulations from across the political spectrum, including former President Donald Trump, who called the astronauts “very brave people.”

Approximately three and a half hours after launch, Orion separated from the Space Launch System and began testing proximity operations, crucial maneuvers for docking with a lunar lander or the future Gateway space station. The capsule then entered a 24-hour Earth orbit to thoroughly test its systems before embarking on its lunar trajectory. Engineers were already addressing a minor issue with the capsule’s toilet shortly after liftoff, demonstrating the real-time challenges of spaceflight.

A New Space Race?

Beyond the celebratory milestones, Artemis II is driven by a strategic imperative. China has announced its intention to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030, and some assessments suggest they may reach that goal before the United States. NASA Director Jared Isaacman has publicly acknowledged the possibility of China reaching the lunar surface first. As SpacePolicyOnline.com reported, the nation that establishes a foothold on the Moon will have a significant say in how lunar resources are extracted and which entities control strategic locations on the surface.

This isn’t a direct echo of the Cold War-era space race with the Soviet Union, but the underlying logic is similar. While the U.S. Is focusing its efforts on the Moon’s South Pole, believed to be rich in water ice crucial for future lunar bases, China is concentrating on the visible side of the Moon – the same area where Apollo 11 first landed in 1969.

Italy’s Crucial Role in Artemis II

The launch wasn’t just a spectacle for observers; Italy played a vital, and often unseen, role in making it possible. A significant portion of the Orion spacecraft’s European Service Module (ESM) – the system providing propulsion, power, air, and water to the astronauts – was constructed in Italy. Thales Alenia Space in Turin built the module’s primary structure, thermal control systems, and the systems for distributing potable water, oxygen, and nitrogen. Without these Italian-made components, the Orion capsule couldn’t survive the harsh conditions of deep space.

Leonardo, at its facility near Milan, manufactured the solar panels that comprise the module’s four wings, as well as the onboard electronics for controlling and distributing power. These contributions highlight Italy’s deep involvement in the Artemis program.

Future Collaboration and an Italian Astronaut on the Moon

The partnership between Italy and NASA extends beyond Artemis II. In Washington, NASA recently signed an agreement with the Italian government to develop lunar habitat modules built in Italy for the lunar surface. The agreement likewise envisions an Italian astronaut walking on the Moon, though a specific candidate hasn’t been named yet. Potential candidates are currently part of the astronaut corps at the European Space Agency (ESA).

Before launch, Commander Wiseman emphasized the necessity of international collaboration in space exploration, stating, “The plans that this agency and this nation are putting in place, we cannot do that alone, not in the long run. There’s no way to explore the cosmos if we don’t do it together, all of us, as a coalition. If you wish to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. That’s been our motto from the beginning.”

If all goes according to plan, the Orion capsule will splash down in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of San Diego, on April 10th. The data collected during Artemis II will be crucial for refining systems and preparing for future missions that will ultimately return humans to the lunar surface.

The success of Artemis II represents not just a technological achievement, but a testament to the power of international cooperation in pushing the boundaries of human exploration. As the program progresses, the focus will shift to developing the lunar landers – contracted to SpaceX and Blue Origin – necessary to actually set foot on the Moon, currently slated for 2028. The next major milestone will be the analysis of the data gathered during this flight, paving the way for a new era of lunar discovery.
