Epstein-Barr Virus and Mononucleosis Triple the Risk of Multiple Sclerosis

A common viral infection known as “the kissing disease” may be more than just a rite of passage for teenagers. New research indicates that individuals who have contracted infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) face a significantly higher risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) later in life.
