At Galaxy Unpacked July 2026 in London, Samsung Electronics unveiled the eighth-generation Galaxy Z series, introducing three distinct foldable experiences designed to expand the technology to a wider audience. The new lineup consists of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold8, and the Galaxy Z Flip8.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Performance and Productivity

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra marks the first time Samsung has brought “Ultra” level branding to its foldable portfolio. According to Rachel Roberts, a product manager for Samsung America, the device is centered on productivity, featuring a top-of-the-line camera system, battery, and charging capabilities.

The device is the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold to date, measuring 4.1 millimetres thick when unfolded and weighing 215 grams. It features a spacious 8-inch main display. To improve durability and reduce the visibility of the display crease, Samsung utilized its proprietary Flex Titanium technology, which combines a titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate. This structure also optimizes the hinge mechanism, magnetic force, and display tension to make unfolding feel more natural.

The Ultra model leverages agentic AI to enhance multitasking through tools like Gemini Notebook. This feature allows users to upload audio recordings of presentations or PDF meeting minutes to generate summaries, which can then be transformed into podcasts, presentation slides, quizzes, and AI-generated videos.

Galaxy Z Fold8: Immersive Content and Design

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is described as a reimagined form factor intended for users who prioritize immersion in content over productivity. Weighing 201 grams, it is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy and includes a 4,800mAh battery that supports more than 26 hours of video playback.

The device utilizes specific display ratios to adapt to different types of content:

  • Cover Screen: A 10:16 aspect ratio for short-form content, messaging, and social updates.
  • Main Display (Unfolded): A 4:3 aspect ratio designed for gaming and movies.
  • Main Display (Rotated): A 3:4 aspect ratio suited for browsing the web and reading e-books.

The main screen features a low-reflection finish, Vision Booster, and up to 3,000 nits of brightness. For content creation, the device includes Galaxy AI-powered My FanCam, which automatically reframes video around a selected subject in the Gallery app.

Galaxy Z Flip8 and the “Goldilocks” Positioning

The Galaxy Z Flip8 continues to emphasize “pocketability” as its primary selling point. The device features more intuitive AI on its FlexWindow, which allows users to view schedules, weather, and important notifications via personalized cards. App functionality is extended to the FlexWindow, enabling users to chat with friends or browse photos without unfolding the device.

Rachel Roberts characterized the Galaxy Z Fold8 as the “Goldilocks” option—positioned as a middle ground for those who find the Z Flip8 too small and the Z Fold8 Ultra too large.

Market Context and Pre-Order Offers

Industry analysts suggest that Samsung’s diverse lineup is part of an exploratory approach to see which form factors resonate with consumers, a trend also seen with Motorola and various Chinese brands. However, Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for data and analytics at IDC, noted that the Fold 8’s closed format remains uncommon and can be awkward to carry in a pocket compared to standard smartphones.

Samsung has implemented a pre-registration program for the new series. Registered users receive a $30 reserve credit, which is a $20 decrease from the $50 credit offered during the Galaxy Z Fold 7 program. Total savings for pre-orders can reach up to $1,230 when factoring in trade-in values. Additional offers include a $100 discount code (“PAYPAL100”) and free subscriptions to Adobe Lightroom and Amazon Music.
