Charlotte FC Signs Rodolfo Aloko to First Team Contract

Charlotte FC has officially signaled its commitment to the next generation of attacking talent, announcing that the club has signed forward Rodolfo Aloko to a first team contract. The 19-year-old, who has spent the early part of the 2026 season tearing through the second division, moves up from Crown Legacy FC to join the senior squad.

The move arrives as Aloko has become a focal point of the club’s developmental success. He joins the first team as a U22 Initiative signing, securing a guaranteed deal that runs through June 30, 2030. The agreement also includes a club option for the 2030-31 MLS season, reflecting the organization’s long-term confidence in the young forward’s ceiling.

For Aloko, the promotion is a reward for a blistering start to the year. In just four matches with Crown Legacy FC, the Benin international has recorded six goals and two assists. Those numbers currently lead MLS NEXT Pro in both goals and total goal contributions through the first five matchdays of the season.

A Rapid Ascent from Croatia to the Queen City

Aloko’s journey to the first team has been characterized by a steady, disciplined climb. The club originally acquired the forward in September 2025 from the Croatian side NK Kustošija. In a move designed to allow the teenager to finish his developmental cycle in Europe, Charlotte permitted him to remain in Croatia through the complete of 2025 before he officially joined Crown Legacy.

That patience paid dividends immediately upon his arrival in North Carolina. Aloko dominated the month of March, earning MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Month honors after opening the campaign with back-to-back braces. He maintained that momentum by finding the back of the net in each of his subsequent two appearances, proving that his physical attributes and clinical finishing were ready for a higher stage.

“Rodolfo is another example of our growing list of young talents coming through our development pathway, and we are happy to witness him move so quickly to the First Team,” said General Manager Zoran Krneta. “When we signed him in September, we knew he was a promising, young talent, but needed to settle into a novel market. We’ve been impressed with his performances during the preseason, with Crown Legacy and at AFCON with Benin. His versatility at the forward positions with great physical attributes and an extremely strong function ethic will continue to keep his ceiling high.”

International Experience and the AFCON Stage

While his domestic form has been the primary catalyst for this contract, Aloko brings a level of international seasoning rarely seen in a 19-year-old. Since making his debut for the Benin national team in June 2025, he has earned seven caps, establishing himself as a rising star for his country.

The defining moment of his young career thus far came during this winter’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Aloko was a key part of the Beninese squad, appearing in four matches and earning two starts. His contributions helped guide Benin to the Round of 16, where they were eventually eliminated by Egypt in a grueling extra-time battle.

That experience in high-pressure, knockout football is exactly what the Charlotte coaching staff believes will accelerate his integration into the first team. By combining the raw productivity of the NEXT Pro level with the tactical discipline learned on the international stage, Aloko enters the senior roster as a versatile option across the front line.

Roster Maneuvers and the San Diego Trade

Integrating a new U22 Initiative player requires a delicate balancing act of MLS roster rules. To make room for Aloko, Charlotte FC transitioned Kerwin Vargas from a U22 Initiative spot to a Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) player.

To facilitate the necessary financial flexibility for these moves, the club engaged in a strategic trade with San Diego FC. The transaction involved a swap of General Allocation Money (GAM) and future draft assets to ensure the club remains compliant while maximizing its salary cap efficiency.

These maneuvers underscore the “chess match” nature of modern MLS roster building, where the acquisition of a player like Aloko often triggers a chain reaction of financial adjustments across the league.

The promotion of Aloko serves as a blueprint for the club’s “pathway” philosophy: identifying talent abroad, seasoning them in the reserve system, and promoting them only when the data and the eye test align. With a contract extending into the next decade, the club is betting that Aloko is not just a temporary spark, but a cornerstone of their future attack.

Aloko is expected to join first-team training immediately. The club has not yet announced a specific debut date, but his presence on the bench is anticipated for the upcoming matchday sequence.
