Google Launches Selfie Video Feature for Secure Account Recovery

Google is rolling out a new selfie video feature enabling users to record and store a facial reference video for account recovery. The system uses liveness checks and encryption to prevent impersonation, offering an alternative verification option when traditional credentials are lost.

How Selfie Video Sign-In and Account Recovery Works

When traditional login avenues fail, Google’s new feature introduces a visual fallback. Users who get locked out, forget their password, or don’t have access to the phone, computer, or two-factor authentication apps they typically use can capture a short video of their face on a mobile device or PC to confirm they’re the account owner. Joe Hindy of Android Authority notes that the new feature allows users to record a short video of themselves and later use it to verify their identity when signing in to their Google account.

Setting up the option requires heading to the Security & sign-in section of a Google Account, choosing selfie video, and following onscreen prompts that guide simple head movements. This captures multiple angles of the face, mirroring setup procedures for security features like Apple’s Face ID without the need for added infrared light. For computers lacking a camera, Google can hand off the process to another device via a QR code.

If users later lose access to their account, Google may prompt them to record another short video performing simple movements to prove it’s being recorded live. That fresh recording is compared against the one previously saved to the account, and if the faces match, access can be restored.

Security Safeguards Against Deepfakes and Spoofing

Security relies on more than a static image comparison. During sign-in or account recovery, multiple layers of security are used to prevent impersonation attempts.

The sign-in flow requires users to perform guided movements to prove that the video is being recorded live, helping defend against attackers trying to get into accounts using fake photos or AI-generated deepfakes. Beyond facial matching and liveness detection, Google also uses its existing suspicious sign-in detection systems when evaluating recovery attempts. Google states that reference files are recorded and securely stored in the cloud using encryption, making it accessible to more than just the device where it was created.

Privacy Controls and Optional AI Training

Users retain full control over their stored verification files. Account holders can delete their saved selfie video whenever they want from their Google Account settings. Once deleted, the video can no longer be used for account recovery, although Google notes it may temporarily retain deleted videos for security reasons or longer in cases involving policy enforcement.

By default, the saved recording is only used to help you sign in. However, users can also opt to share it for additional purposes; Google is making participation in its AI training efforts optional. When you upload a selfie video, you can choose whether to let Google use the video and related data to improve facial recognition, age estimation, and other identity verification tech. That setting can be enabled or revoked at any time from the selfie video page in your Google Account.

Rollout Timeline and Account Limitations

The feature functions as an alternative recovery option rather than a replacement for existing methods like recovery phone numbers, recovery emails, passkeys, or recovery contacts. Google is rolling out the feature today through a phased global rollout, and you can check if your account is eligible and set up your selfie video at g.co/signin-selfie.

Availability is not universal at launch. According to Google, the selfie video feature won’t be available to everyone, including users with Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, or accounts enrolled in Google’s Advanced Protection Program.
