Reigning heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson and sprinter Dina Asher-Smith have withdrawn from the England team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, pulling out alongside seven other athletes on the day of the opening ceremony.
The entire event was initially placed in peril when the original Australian host state of Victoria withdrew from hosting duties. Glasgow subsequently stepped in to rescue the Games, which bring together nations from the Commonwealth—most of which are former British colonies or dependencies.

Johnson-Thompson, who captured gold at both the 2018 Gold Coast Games and the Birmingham 2022 Games, was expected to target a hat-trick of titles in Glasgow. Instead, she joins Asher-Smith and seven other members of the England athletics contingent on a rapidly growing withdrawal list.
Fellow Olympic medallists Matthew Hudson-Smith and Daryll Neita also announced their withdrawals alongside Amber Anning, Zac Sneddon, Anna Purchase, Elliot Giles, and Jona Efoloko. Global Stars Skipping the Glasgow Competition
The scheduling crunch extends far beyond the English squad. International stars who previously opted out of the Glasgow Games include multiple Olympic swimming medallists Kaylee McKeown of Australia and Summer McIntosh of Canada, alongside Hodgkinson’s 800m rival Mary Moraa of Kenya. Meanwhile, British gymnastics suffered its own blow when triple Olympic champion Max Whitlock was forced to abandon his comeback bid earlier this month due to injury.
