Texas Rangers place Josh Jung on 10-day IL with calf strain

The Texas Rangers placed third baseman Josh Jung on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain, recalling infielder Josh Smith to fill his spot. Jung’s injury, described as a Grade 1 strain, threatens the team’s playoff push ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

The Texas Rangers placed third baseman Josh Jung on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain, retroactive to Wednesday, as the team scrambles to maintain its AL West lead amid a critical stretch of games. Infielder Josh Smith was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Jung, a move that highlights the franchise’s precarious position as it navigates a high-stakes playoff race and the approaching trade deadline.

Jung’s Injury and the IL Placement

Jung’s injury, initially labeled a “slight” strain, worsened over the weekend, forcing the Rangers to place him on the IL. The 28-year-old third baseman had been struggling with discomfort since exiting a game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, where he left after three innings due to tightness in his left calf. Despite attempting to run in pregame sessions on Friday and Saturday, Jung failed to reach full speed, leading manager Skip Schumaker to make the IL designation.

Rangers put Jung on IL, recall Smith from minors:

It’s at the very bottom of the calf, where it attaches to the Achilles, Jung said, describing the injury’s location. So that’s a little scary, but I think a lot of it is the pain tolerance. I’ve done everything I can to get ready, but when I come out and run, it just wasn’t ready to push it. The injury marks another setback for Jung, who has dealt with calf issues throughout his career, including a 2024 Spring Training strain and a 2025 incident that sidelined him for four games.

Jung’s absence is a blow to the Rangers, who rely on his .294 batting average and 128 wRC+ this season. He’s been a consistent force in the lineup, ranking among AL leaders in batting average, on-base percentage, and multihit games. The team’s decision to place him on the IL came after he was forced to sit out Friday’s game against the Mariners, despite initial optimism that he might return in time for the series.

Manager’s Response and Team Strategy

Smith, recalled from Triple-A Round Rock, has struggled this season, posting a .563 OPS in early May before being demoted. His 70 wRC+ in 23 games at Triple-A suggests he’s not a direct replacement for Jung’s offensive production. However, Smith’s defensive metrics—9 Defensive Runs Saved in 178 appearances at third base—offer some value, though his 2024 season as a neutral defender raises questions about his reliability.

The Rangers’ decision to place Jung on the IL also underscores the team’s urgency. With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, the injury could complicate their plans to bolster the roster. The team is currently 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mariners in the AL West and sits 2 1/2 games ahead of the final AL Wild Card spot. Jung’s absence leaves a void in both the lineup and the field, particularly against right-handed pitching, as Smith was inserted into the starting lineup against right-hander Bryan Woo.

Jung’s Perspective and Team Dynamics

The Rangers’ medical staff and coaching staff reportedly worked aggressively to manage the injury, but the location of the strain—near the Achilles tendon—complicated recovery efforts. Jung’s history with calf injuries, including a 2024 Spring Training strain and a 2025 incident, has raised concerns about the injury’s severity. His earliest possible return is August 1, coinciding with a critical series against the Astros.

What’s Next for the Rangers?

The Rangers now face a delicate balancing act as they approach the trade deadline. With Jung sidelined, the team may look to acquire a short-term solution, but the IL placement complicates such efforts. The injury also raises questions about the team’s depth, particularly at third base, where Smith’s defensive limitations could be exposed against elite offenses.

As the Rangers navigate this challenge, the focus will shift to how they manage the injury and whether they can sustain their momentum without one of their top performers. The coming weeks will determine whether the team can close the gap in the AL West and position itself for a deep playoff run.
