A man and a woman died on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after being pulled from the sea at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. Emergency services responded to the popular surfing destination at around 9:45 p.m., deploying multiple rescue teams and a helicopter before pronouncing both victims dead at the scene.
The tragedy unfolded late Sunday evening at Fistral Beach, a 750-metre stretch of coastline widely recognized as the home of British surfing. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that officers rushed to the South Fistral area following a 9:45 p.m. call from the South Western Ambulance Service. First responders found that two individuals had been pulled from the water, but life-saving efforts proved unsuccessful.
Emergency Response at South Fistral Beach
HM Coastguard coordinated a multi-agency response starting at approximately 9:30 p.m., dispatching Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow, and St Agnes. They were joined on the water and overhead by Newquay RNLI lifeboats and an HM Coastguard rescue helicopter, alongside other emergency services.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the rescue helicopter circling overhead for an extended period, while up to nine emergency vehicles and two lifeboats converged on the scene at South Fistral. Police temporarily established a cordon around the area to allow emergency crews to work before removing it later in the night.
Eyewitness Accounts and Recovery Efforts
One eyewitness told The Sun she saw the horror unfold, saying: A man came running up the cliff saying there were people drowning in the water.
I went halfway down the cliff and saw people at the edge of the water trying to help people out,
the witness continued, adding that a woman nearby was desperately trying to ring someone but couldn’t get through.
She noted that They recovered one body on the beach, while the other one was brought up the cliff.
Sand Phoenix, a 33-year-old who was sleeping on Fistral Beach when the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night, described sprinting to the area to help. He told The Sun: He had been pulled out of the water but had been in there about seven minutes.
Phoenix added: “I had an adrenaline pen which I jabbed him with and tried to give him oxygen but his lungs were full of water and there was no response. The paramedics arrived and carried on trying to give CPR. He was still wearing his trousers so I don’t think he had been swimming. It looks like they had been walking near the rocks and had fallen in.”
Another witness described seeing a soaking wet man in a foil blanket who knew the victims and had been trying to help before emergency services arrived. The eyewitness stated, I’m just in shock, it was awful to watch.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the man and woman, though police confirmed that their families have been informed. Devon and Cornwall Police stated that a file is now being prepared for HM Coroner as inquiries into the fatal incident continue.
