Aaron Strachan, 21, received an order of lifelong restriction at the High Court in Edinburgh after pleading guilty to the abduction and rape of a 15-year-old girl. Strachan, who targeted the teenager at a city center bus stop in May 2024, must serve a minimum of five years before parole consideration.
The court heard how Strachan approached the victim in the early hours of May 25 last year. After the teenager moved toward Princes Street because she felt uneasy, CCTV captured Strachan following her while wearing a balaclava. He eventually ran toward her at a second bus stop while brandishing a knife, seized her by the shoulders, and forced her into a building basement on York Place.
To prevent her escape, Strachan blocked the door using wooden pallets before raping her. Because the attacker did not know the victim, he was identified through DNA found at the scene. He was later located hiding in shrubbery on June 1, 2025, after attempting to run away from police officers on Dalry Road.
The Order of Lifelong Restriction and Judicial Findings
Judge O’Grady determined that Strachan met the criteria for an order of lifelong restriction, an indeterminate sentence ensuring the offender is not released until they are deemed to no longer pose a risk to the public. The judge warned Strachan that he are likely to remain in prison for many years, if indeed you are ever released
.
“The word predatory is perhaps overused in these courts, but it is an inescapable adjective to describe this truly bestial crime. You left your lair and went out hunting for a vulnerable victim. Finding one, you stalked her, threatened her at knifepoint and took her to a dingy basement and raped her.”

The judge further characterized the crime as the stuff of nightmares for every woman and every young girl, and every parent who waits at home for their child to return home safely
. In addition to the rape conviction, Strachan’s name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Additional Violent Crimes and Court Escape
The rape was not the only violent act committed by Strachan during this period. On the same day as the abduction, he repeatedly stabbed a man’s hand with a knife, causing severe injury. He also pleaded guilty to a second assault on May 28, 2025, involving striking another man on the head with a claw hammer. Judge O’Grady noted these other attacks were unprovoked
and targeted virtual strangers
.
Strachan’s path to sentencing was interrupted by a daring escape in January. While being led from the Court of Session to a prison van, he managed to flee, sparking a major police search. He was recaptured in the city a few hours later and subsequently pleaded guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Prosecution Response and Public Safety
