A German citizen with Lebanese roots who was classified by security authorities as an Islamist threat drove a vehicle into a crowd at a Berlin Pride celebration, killing one woman and injuring 29 people before being shot dead by police after a manhunt.
The attack unfolded on a Saturday evening shortly before 22:00 near Potsdamer Platz. A white van driven by 21-year-old Abdul Ballout plowed into participants along the fringes of the Berlin CSD parade, leaving a trail of destruction through the Tiergarten park before crashing to a halt against a tree.
According to investigators, the suspect did not stop at the vehicle collision. He emerged from the van armed with a cutting weapon, reportedly a machete, and attacked bystanders. One woman died at the scene from her injuries, while 29 other people sustained wounds ranging from minor to severe.
Manhunt, Standoff, and Police Operations in Berlin
Following the crash and subsequent assaults, the suspect fled on foot into the sprawling, wooded paths of the Tiergarten, sparking a massive emergency response. Federal police elite units alongside local Berlin forces searched properties, including an apartment in the Schöneberg district. Investigators briefly detained an Iranian national found near the scene during the initial hours of the manhunt, but authorities later cleared him and released him from custody.
The nationwide manhunt ended on Sunday evening when police located Ballout in a allotment garden area in Spandau. As officers closed in, the suspect advanced on law enforcement with a bladed weapon, prompting members of Berlin’s special SEK tactical unit to open fire. Fire department personnel performed immediate resuscitation measures on site, but the 21-year-old died from his wounds at the location.
Radicalization Track Record and Prior Court Decisions
Born and raised in Berlin to a mother naturalized in 2002, Ballout had come to the attention of domestic intelligence services before turning 16. Prosecutors outlined a trajectory of radicalization that included posting prohibited Islamic State propaganda on Instagram in June 2024 and attempting to travel abroad to join militant groups.
His travel attempts involved flying to Lebanon in May 2025 with the ultimate intent of reaching Syria. Lebanese authorities arrested him in July 2025, convicting him in a military court to three months in prison for inciting religious and sectarian conflict. Upon returning to Germany in November 2025, federal police arrested him at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, holding him in custody until a May 2026 court ruling.
Abdul B. was sentenced by a juvenile court on May 12 to a juvenile sentence of one year and ten months, according to the Berlin General Prosecutor’s Office.
A juvenile court sentenced Ballout to one year and 10 months in prison in May for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. However, the court deferred its decision on whether to suspend the sentence, releasing him under six months of probation supervision while prosecutors appealed for a harsher penalty. Court documents cited his cooperative testimony and stated distancing from the Islamic State as factors in the conditional release, though supervision included an obligation to attend a deradicalization program run by a free provider.
Security Vulnerabilities and Political Fallout
Questions mounted over park security after investigators confirmed the van accessed the pedestrian zone despite thousands of security barriers deployed across the city. While authorities pointed to thousands of metal barriers and hundreds of concrete blocks intended to block vehicle access, journalists at the scene noted wide gaps between trees near the Lessing monument where the vehicle breached the perimeter.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt visited the site on Sunday afternoon, classifying the incident as an islamist terrorist attack and confirming that the federal prosecutor’s office had assumed control of the investigation to pursue potential accomplices or co-conspirators.
