Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward agreed to a two-year, $62.2 million contract extension on Tuesday, securing $52.3 million in guaranteed money and returning to his status as the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
The Cleveland Browns have locked down Denzel Ward yet again, ensuring the veteran cornerback stays with the franchise that drafted him. The fresh deal carries an annual average value of just more than $31 million, ESPN for the second time in his career.
Ward entered the negotiations with two years remaining on the five-year, $100.5 million rookie extension he originally signed in April 2022. That previous agreement was slated to run through 2027, but this latest two-year addition tethers the cornerback to Cleveland through the 2029 campaign.
Market Reset at the Top of the Cornerback Ranks
With this extension, Ward reclaims the top financial spot at his position from Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie, who previously held the mantle while earning $31 million per season. Indianapolis Colts defensive back Sauce Gardner remained the only other player at the position earning upwards of $30 million annually.
Financial reset markers are nothing new for Ward, who signed a five-year, $100.5 million extension in 2022 that briefly set the market standard before subsequent contracts surpassed it. This new agreement places him among an elite group as the seventh defensive back to land a deal with an average annual value of at least $25 million.
Resumé and Roots in Cleveland
A native of Ohio who starred at Ohio State, Ward has spent his entire professional career with the franchise that selected him with the No. 4 overall pick in 2018. Over eight seasons, he has accumulated 104 pass deflections and 18 interceptions.
The 29-year-old cornerback earned his fifth career Pro Bowl selection last season, logging 39 total tackles and an interception. That performance marked his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod dating back to 2023, while keeping intact a streak of recording at least one interception in every single season of his career.
Roster Stability Amid an Offseason Overhaul
Ward’s commitment arrives at a transitional moment for the franchise. Following the decision to trade star defensive end Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the summer, Ward stepped into the role of Cleveland’s longest-tenured player. General manager Andrew Berry expressed a clear desire to keep the home-state corner in place, while Ward made it known throughout the offseason that he wanted to stay rather than seek an exit.
The timing of the agreement coincided with a broader wave of veteran compensation adjustments across the league as training camps opened. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter secured a four-year, $152 million deal, and the Minnesota Vikings agreed to a four-year, $96 million contract with offensive lineman Brian O’Neill.
While the Browns navigate a rebuild after finishing last season with a 5-12 record under new head coach Todd Monken, securing their premier cover corner ensures stability in the secondary as the team prepares to open the 2026 season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13.
