Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened across China on Wednesday at a pace the market has not seen for a U.S. comic-book movie in at least seven years, according to Hollywoodreporter. The film earned more than $16.5 million (RMB 112 million) by midday on its opening day, with local ticketing giant Maoyan projecting a $37.4 million (RMB 254 million) first-day total.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Dominates China Box Office
The publication noted that no other superhero title has approached such heights since Spider-Man: Far From Home opened to $36 million in 2019. By comparison, Venom: The Last Dance sits in a distant second place with $9.4 million earned on its first day on Chinese screens in 2024. Furthermore, Hollywoodreporter stated that presales finished at $18.6 million (RMB 126.2 million), marking the best figures for any imported film over the past three summers.
Strong Box-Office Projections and International Rollout
Chinese box-office trackers anticipate substantial earnings for Tom Holland’s latest appearance in the spider suit. Maoyan published a full-run forecast on the eve of release estimating an ultimate China total of $255 million (RMB 1.73 billion), while rival tracker Dengta projected more than $265 million (RMB 1.8 billion). According to Hollywoodreporter, a finish in that range would mark Hollywood’s biggest China gross since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water and its $246 million total.
Sony and Marvel scheduled the release so that China received the world’s earliest release date—two days ahead of North America—alongside an exclusive Imax launch. Tom Holland and Zendaya attended a local premiere in Shanghai, where Holland recounted to local media that Jackie Chan visited the London set and that Chan’s stunt team helped choreograph action sequences.
Plot, Returning Characters, and Creative Direction
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi, the 38th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe picks up four years after No Way Home. Time Magazine reported that Peter Parker spends his days protecting New York alone while MJ and Ned study at MIT, returning to New York after graduation to draw blank stares when Peter attempts to speak with them.
According to The Guardian, the narrative features an unseen entity possessing the bodies of important people, starting with the villainous Scorpion, played by Michael Mando, and targeting a government unit run by Bill Metzger, played by Tramell Tillman. Additionally, Rotten Tomatoes noted that the cast features Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, and Sadie Sink.
Critical Reception and Physical Changes for Parker
Early reviews for the film have been largely supportive. Hollywoodreporter noted that the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score hovers around 90 percent, with analysts projecting a North America opening in the $180 million range and a global launch exceeding $425 million.
Beyond external threats, Time Magazine reported that Peter experiences physical and mental health issues, including web-shooting capabilities going awry. His AI assistant, E.V.I.E., informs him that the malfunction stems from a massive increase in arachnid hormones,
which also increases his aggression. Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that the film is scheduled for release on July 29 in the UK, July 30 in Australia, and July 31 in the US.
