Rebel Wolves announced that its debut dark fantasy role-playing game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, sold over 1 million copies worldwide within days of its September 3 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, defying the hurdles typical of a brand-new intellectual property.
A Fast Seven-Figure Start for a New Studio
When a newly formed independent studio drops a brand-new intellectual property into a crowded market, reaching a million-unit milestone is rarely a rapid affair. Yet Warsaw-based Rebel Wolves crossed that exact threshold in under 48 hours, according to the studio’s confirmation on social media following the game’s September 3 release.

Publisher Bandai Namco and the development team confirmed that the milestone was reached just two days after launch across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. By September 5, official accounts shared celebratory graphics to mark the early sales surge. Thank you for playing, sharing, supporting, and being part of the community,
the developer wrote in a post acknowledging the rapid uptake.

Although the developer has not broken down the figures by individual platform, the sheer velocity of the sales points heavily toward day-one momentum. That trajectory places the studio’s maiden voyage among the faster-selling new intellectual properties in recent memory.
The Witcher Veterans and the World of Coen
Much of the initial industry attention stems from the pedigree behind the project. Rebel Wolves was founded in 2022 by industry veterans, including Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who served as the game director on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Several other alumni from Polish developer CD Projekt Red joined the team, lending immediate weight to the studio’s debut.

Unlike Tomaszkiewicz’s previous blockbuster, The Blood of Dawnwalker is an entirely original creation built in Unreal Engine 5 rather than an established book adaptation. Set in a fictionalized version of 14th-century Europe, the story centers on a protagonist named Coen. As a young man who is human by day and a vampire by night, Coen navigates a grim setting where powerful vampires have seized control of the Vale Sangora region.
Narrative choices dictate how the campaign unfolds, further complicated by an in-game clock that imposes a strict 30-day deadline for Coen to save his family. That temporal restriction has triggered lively discussions among players, with some embracing the urgency while others seek ways around it.
Technical Friction, Community Mods, and Player Counts
Early momentum has not entirely shielded the release from friction. Performance on the Steam Deck and other Windows handhelds required notable graphical and hardware compromises to remain playable. Meanwhile, the PC community wasted no time experimenting with game systems via Nexus Mods, though some of the most popular downloaded mods reportedly conflicted with the title’s core survival mechanics.

Engagement metrics on streaming and storefront platforms illustrate the breadth of the audience tuning in. According to platform data tracked during the launch window, the game reached an all-time peak of 78,188 concurrent players on Steam. Twitch viewership saw similar enthusiasm, logging an all-time peak of more than 160,000 viewers across live channels.
Critical reception has also provided a tailwind. IGN awarded the title a 9/10 score, calling it an impressive, bloody cocktail of interesting ideas and well-written characters, while PC Gamer’s review praised the storytelling and combat while noting the distinct nature of its time mechanics.
Looking Ahead Across Centuries and Continents
With a seven-figure baseline established in its opening days, Rebel Wolves faces the task of sustaining long-term engagement. The broader industrial context underscores the significance of the moment: Poland’s wider gaming sector continues to show robust performance, highlighted by CD Projekt’s recent 37% rise in first-half net profit driven by ongoing Witcher and Cyberpunk sales.
For the Dawnwalker franchise itself, the initial commercial success makes future installments far more viable. Bandai Namco previously released a CGI teaser hinting at a modern, 21st-century setting, indicating that subsequent entries in the saga will span centuries, continents, and cultures across the globe. Tomaszkiewicz has noted that each planned follow-up is intended as a standalone entry featuring its own narrative, steering clear of unresolved cliffhangers or time travel.
