Palaeontologists have unearthed a 210-million-year-old dinosaur species named Musango matusadonaensis on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. The 4.5-metre-long early sauropodomorph lived during the Late Triassic period, providing new evidence that southern Africa hosted distinct ecosystems rather than a single uniform prehistoric environment.
Unearthing Musango Matusadonaensis on Lake Kariba
A newly identified dinosaur species from Zimbabwe is rewriting what scientists understand about the prehistoric geography of southern Africa. Discovered from a remarkably complete skeleton unearthed near Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe, the species has been officially named Musango matusadonaensis. It stands as the fifth dinosaur species formally identified and described from the country.
The fossil was excavated from rocks belonging to the Pebbly Arkose Formation, which dates back to the Norian stage of the Late Triassic period. During this era, approximately 210 million years ago, dinosaurs were beginning to spread across the globe but had not yet claimed their place as Earth’s dominant land animals.
Excavation teams recovered well-preserved bones from the spine, ribs, shoulders, hips, and limbs. The skeleton is so complete that researchers were initially mistaken about its identity while digging out the deposit. The exposed bones initially resembled those of a non-dinosaurian archosaur—a broader reptile lineage that includes crocodilians and early dinosaur ancestors. Only after full laboratory preparation did distinctive pelvic features confirm it as an entirely new dinosaur.
An Early Sauropodomorph Built for Agility
Musango belongs to the sauropodomorph lineage, an evolutionary group that eventually produced massive, long-necked herbivores such as Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus. However, this Zimbabwean specimen represents a much earlier, smaller phase of that evolutionary journey.

Measuring about 4.5 metres (15 feet) in length, Musango was comparable in size to a family car, yet surprisingly light. It weighed an estimated 222 kilogrammes (490 pounds), which is roughly the weight of a fully grown pig. Scientists believe the animal moved primarily on two legs, giving it the agility required to navigate seasonal landscapes.
The bone tissue also contained reactive growth indicating that Musango had previously survived a serious injury or infection before the bone healed over.
Challenging Assumptions About Prehistoric Ecosystems
The discovery challenges decades-old assumptions among palaeontologists regarding dinosaur distribution across the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. Researchers previously assumed that southern Africa’s Triassic fauna was largely uniform across the region.

Unresolved Questions and Future Discoveries
Despite the preservation of the skeleton’s vertebral column, limbs, and ribs, one significant piece remains absent: the skull. Without cranial material, researchers cannot determine its exact diet, though they suspect it was likely a herbivore or an omnivore feeding on riverside vegetation.
The discovery follows the 2022 identification of Mbiresaurus raathi, which roamed the same region around 230 million years ago as Africa’s oldest known dinosaur, alongside the 2024 description of Musankwa sanyatiensis.
With research teams continuing fieldwork in Zimbabwe, scientists suggest this find is merely a starting point for uncovering further unrecorded prehistoric biodiversity across understudied African deposits.
