While Barcola remains under contract with the European champions for another two years, his long-term future in the French capital has grown uncertain. The 23-year-old has turned down attempts by Paris Saint-Germain to secure a contract extension. His resistance stems from frustration over a lack of guaranteed playing time during high-profile fixtures last season.
Competition for places in Luis Enrique’s squad proved fierce. Barcola made 49 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing 13 goals and seven assists as the club retained the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League. However, the January 2025 arrival of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia established Kvaratskhelia as the primary choice on the left flank, leaving Barcola to compete with Desire Doue and frequently forcing him to settle for substitute appearances in the latter stages of the Champions League run.
The financial terms of any potential transfer remain a central obstacle. Paris Saint-Germain initially placed a valuation in the region of £145 million (€170m) on the forward, a sum that would represent British record sum. More recent market information, however, suggests the French club could be willing to negotiate closer to £128.5 million (€150m). Even with potential softening from Paris, Liverpool intend to push for a deal closer to £100m, leveraging the player’s clear desire to leave.
