Trade representatives from China, Macao, and Portuguese-speaking countries finalized 24 cooperation agreements worth about 150 million U.S. dollars in Maputo, Mozambique. The July 24, 2026, entrepreneurs meeting focused on logistics infrastructure and commemorated the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Mozambique.
Economic ties between China and Portuguese-speaking nations entered a tangible new phase in the Mozambican capital as more than 350 government and business delegates gathered for a high-level trade conference. The Entrepreneurs Meeting for Commercial and Economic Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries brought together stakeholders from the Chinese mainland, Macao, Mozambique, Hengqin, and other regions to evaluate cross-border commercial opportunities.
Infrastructure Investments Drive 24 Deals Worth 150 Million Dollars
The day-long gathering, hosted at the Mozambique–China Cultural Centre, generated a combined total of 24 cooperation agreements valued at approximately 150 million U.S. dollars. These accords span multiple sectors critical to regional development, including infrastructure, international trade, professional services, and academic cooperation.
The event was co-organized by the Agency for the Promotion of Investment and Exports of Mozambique (APIEX), the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao Special Administrative Region (IPIM).
Strategic Partnerships and Regional Integration
Senior officials at the Maputo conference emphasized that bilateral ties have matured significantly over the past decade.
Transport and Logistics Minister João Jorge Matlombe pointed out that Mozambique possesses abundant natural resources and energy potential. He stressed that the growing openness of the Chinese market to African goods presents historic opportunities for local enterprises. Meanwhile, APIEX director general Luís José Machava underscored that infrastructure investments will serve as a massive driver
of future growth, while Maputo Municipal Council president Rasaque Manhique characterized the gathering as profoundly significant for the country’s economic diversification efforts.
Macao’s Role and Future Outlook
Delegates attending the Maputo meetings also participated in guided site visits to local enterprises, regional ports, and ongoing infrastructure projects, complemented by specialized seminars outlining Mozambique’s business climate. Macao’s institutional representatives reinforced the territory’s ongoing function as a bridge between Asian markets and Lusophone nations.
IPIM executive director Sam Lei stated that the conference represents both a concrete step in elevating China-Mozambique relations and a broader deepening of economic ties across Portuguese-speaking economies. The Macau SAR Government emphasized that the region functions as a precise liaison
for cross-border industrial chain cooperation. Looking ahead, organizers announced that East Timor will host the next edition of the Entrepreneurs Meeting, with Macao pledging continued support to solidify trade conduits.
