Buck Moon Lights Up July Skies Ahead of August Total Solar Eclipse

The eighth full moon of 2026, known traditionally as the Buck Moon, reached peak illumination on Wednesday, July 29, glowing low and amber across global evening skies. This midsummer full moon sets the stage for a rare celestial alignment, preceding a total solar eclipse scheduled for August 12.

The Timing and Trajectory of the July Buck Moon

The celestial satellite reached its exact full phase at 10:37 a.m. EDT on July 29, while tucked below the horizon for observers across North America. Sky-gazers instead captured the spectacle at moonrise during dusk, just after local sunset. In New York City, the moon rose at roughly 8:33 p.m., while Los Angeles saw moonrise around 8:18 p.m.

Because the midsummer full moon sits opposite a high July sun, it followed a notably low arc across the Northern Hemisphere sky. Noah Petro, chief of the Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Lab at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, noted that viewing conditions remain forgiving. Sky-gazers enjoy flexibility as long as you’re in a place that’s free of bright lights and you have a fairly clear view of the sky, Petro said.

Why July’s Full Moon Wears an Amber Tint

Observers from North Carolina to Europe witnessed a distinctly warm, reddish-orange lunar disk as the moon cleared the horizon. This optical phenomenon, known as Rayleigh scattering, occurs when moonlight travels through dense layers of the atmosphere at low angles, scattering shorter blue wavelengths while allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to reach human eyes.

In North Carolina, skywatcher Kevin McCarthy described the visual impact during a late-night observation. I stepped out onto my driveway in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 11:15 p.m. to capture tonight’s full Buck Moon, McCarthy said, noting that the moon carried a definite warm tint from low-altitude atmospheric filtration.

In parts of Europe and North America, wildfire smoke added an extra layer of atmospheric discoloration. Planetary Science Institute senior scientist Pamela Gay explained the mechanics behind the smoky haze. When daytime skies lose their bright blue hue, that’s the smoke scattering sunlight, Gay said, adding, The exact same thing is going to happen with moonlight.

Cultural Traditions Behind the Buck Moon Name

Indigenous communities and European settlers attached various names to July’s full moon based on seasonal shifts. The term Buck Moon originates from Algonquin-speaking communities and other Indigenous groups in the northeastern United States, marking the period when young male deer grow velvet-covered antlers.

Alternative historical titles reflect regional conditions and agricultural practices of midsummer. The Dakota people observed the moon when chokecherries ripened, while the Cree referred to it as the feather moulting moon. Other traditional names include the Thunder Moon and the Hay Moon.

A Busy Night for Meteor Showers and Planetary Sights

The brilliant illumination of the July full moon outshined concurrent meteor activity, though multiple showers remained active.

Reflecting on the broader significance of the lunar cycle, Petro emphasized the enduring human bond with Earth’s closest neighbor.

The Upcoming Total Solar Eclipse and Late Summer Trilogy

July’s full moon serves as the opening act for a heavy sequence of late-summer astronomical events. Half an orbit later, on August 12, the new moon will position itself directly between Earth and the sun, producing a total solar eclipse across eastern Greenland, western Iceland, and northern Spain, where the sun’s corona will emerge for over two minutes.

Western Europe and North America will experience varying degrees of a partial solar eclipse during the August 12 event. Viewers in Newfoundland, parts of eastern Canada, and the northeastern United States will observe partial phases, with solar eclipse glasses remaining essential safety gear. Just two weeks later, on August 28, the lunar cycle concludes another chapter when the Sturgeon Moon passes deep into Earth’s shadow for a partial lunar eclipse visible across the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
