Limpopo law enforcement agencies arrested 127 undocumented foreign nationals during a multidisciplinary sweep across the Vhembe District, part of an intensifying provincial security initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and organized crime across the province.

—fell within the broader framework of Operation Shanela II, according to authorities detailing the provincial crackdown. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that the detained individuals included 115 Zimbabwean nationals, nine from Ethiopia, and three from Ghana, all taken into custody for contravening the Immigration Act.
Operation Retshepeng and District-Wide Enforcement in Vhembe
The Vhembe District operation brought together the South African Police Service, immigration services, the Department of Employment and Labour, and other regional safety stakeholders. Officers recorded 302 separate law enforcement actions during the deployment, spanning stop-and-searches, roadblocks, compliance inspections, and high-visibility patrols.
Beyond immigration checks, the integrated teams targeted local employers suspected of violating labor statutes. Three employers were arrested for allegedly hiring undocumented foreign workers, signaling a dual-pronged approach that scrutinizes both supply and demand within the regional labor market.
Arrests for Violent Crimes and Seizures of Contraband
The sweep extended beyond immigration enforcement to net suspects linked to serious offenses. Police apprehended individuals wanted for robbery, theft, burglary, assault, the possession of suspected stolen property, and drug-related crimes.
Operational teams also targeted illicit trade and public safety violations, recovering significant quantities of contraband. Law enforcement officers confiscated dagga, crystal methamphetamine, more than 103 liters of liquor, and nine dangerous weapons, alongside issuing fines and arrests for illegal gambling and road traffic infractions.

Following their detention in the Vhembe District, the 115 undocumented Zimbabwean nationals were cleared for repatriation.
Provincial law enforcement officials linked the heightened enforcement tempo to broader social and political pressures across Limpopo. Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba noted that authorities had concentrated efforts in central business districts following recent anti-immigration demonstrations and rising public debate over undocumented migration in the province.
“We have also managed to arrest a huge number of undocumented immigrants in the CBD alone, so this is the work that we have been conducting in recent times, especially after the anti-immigration march and the sentiments that we have seen in this province. We have been working very hard to ensure that those who are undocumented are arrested and deported back to their countries of origin.”
