Rangers began the 2026-2027 Scottish Premiership season with a 1-1 draw against Dundee United on Friday, marking an underwhelming start to the tenure of new manager Derek McInnes. The result means Rangers have settled for a draw in their opening match for the fourth straight season.
Rangers Held to Draw in Derek McInnes’ Managerial Debut
The match at Tannadice Park saw Dundee United take the lead in the first half when Lachlan Rose tapped in a low cross from Jesse Randall. Rangers improved following the interval, equalizing through a strike from Thelo Aasgaard. Despite the comeback, Rangers failed to secure a victory, and they were fortunate to avoid defeat late in the game when Randall dinked a shot directly at debutant goalkeeper Ivor Pandur.
Following the match, McInnes told Sky Sports that it was disappointing to drop a couple of points, but noted that they had not been good enough to secure all three. He added that the team must have more trust in what they are doing, keep their shoulder to the wheel, and do simple things better.
New-Look Squad and Debutants
The match provided a first glimpse of a revamped Rangers side under McInnes, featuring several players making their competitive debuts from the start. These included goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, centre-back Ben Godfrey, and the former Hearts duo of Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin. The performance drew mixed reactions from former Rangers players. Steven Thompson, speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, suggested there is no need to panic, noting that earning a point away at a difficult venue is acceptable for a first game of the season.
Conversely, Andy Halliday criticized the tactical setup on Sportsound, arguing that Rangers were the furthest thing from compact
and that the best individuals on the pitch, with the exception of Aasgaard, were Dundee United players.
McInnes acknowledged that the team is a work in progress, stating that they are not going to be perfect at this stage of the season and that no player is. He emphasized that the team will improve as they go along and that he is not interested in previous history.
Focus on Future Recruitment
While Rangers are seeking defensive recruits, McInnes identified a specific need for reinforcements in wide areas. Djeidi Gassama started on the left but was substituted at half-time, leading Rangers to finish the match with Aasgaard and Mohamed Diomande playing in narrow positions.
McInnes explained to Sky Sports that the team needs players with the ability to beat defenders to create service for the strikers. He said that they would still like a winger to go get at people, make a difference, and put opponents on the back foot, confirming that the club is working hard to bring those types of players in.
