Researchers have identified a new genus of rove beetles named Luffy, borrowing the name of the central character from the manga and anime series One Piece. The discovery, led by Alexey Solodovnikov and PhD student Fang-Shuo Hu of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, was detailed in a study published June 5, 2026, in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys.
The naming reflects specific anatomical traits rather than simple fandom. Members of the genus possess exceptionally long and slender antennae, maxillary palps, and mandibles. These stretched proportions reminded the scientists of the fictional character Monkey D. Luffy’s rubber body, which allows him to extend and enlarge his limbs.
Identified Species and Regional Discoveries
Scientists have currently identified two species within the new genus:
- Luffy schillhammeri: Discovered in the broadleaf forests of Yunnan Province, China. This species is named in honor of Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his outstanding contributions to rove beetle research.
- Luffy nika: Found in Louang Namtha in northern Laos. The species name refers to Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation, also known as the “Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika” Devil Fruit awakening. This beetle features white bands of hair across its body and elytra, which the researchers noted resembles the white, smoke-covered form of the character’s Nika transformation.
Evolutionary Significance and the Eucibdelus Lineage
Beyond the pop-culture connection, the discovery provides a “missing link” in the evolutionary history of the subtribe Staphylinina. To reach this conclusion, Hu and Solodovnikov conducted a broad review of all known genera in the Ocypus group, including groups with previously uncertain or controversial positions such as Staphylinus, Apostenolinus, and Acupronotes.
The researchers identified specific shared derived characteristics, or synapomorphies, that define the Eucibdelus lineage,
such as a completely sclerotized labrum and the presence of dorsal ridge teeth on the left mandible. According to the study published in ZooKeys, Luffy beetles possess the dorsal ridge teeth of the Eucibdelus lineage, but their labrum is not completely sclerotized.
Because the genus exhibits a unique combination of characters intermediate between the Eucibdelus lineage and other Ocypus-group members, the researchers concluded that Luffy is likely the sister group to the entire Eucibdelus lineage. This position fills an important gap in the existing classification system.
Public Engagement and Biodiversity
The researchers stated that using a globally recognized fictional character serves as a way to make biological taxonomy more approachable and accessible to the public. By linking the discovery to One Piece, the team hopes to encourage young people to explore biodiversity and classification research.

The discovery also underscores the vast amount of undocumented insect life. While beetles are among the most studied animal groups on Earth with roughly 400,000 formally described species, scientists estimate that hundreds of thousands—and potentially over a million—species have yet to be identified. According to reports from Indiatimes, the identification of the Luffy genus illustrates how even extensively studied groups continue to reveal unexpected diversity.
