Google is bringing Gemini in Classroom to K-12 students. The rollout allows teachers to manage AI-driven personalized lessons and diagnostic tools for students, with specific protections for users under 18 and admin-controlled access across more than 100 countries.
Google is moving Gemini study notebooks from individual student use into school-managed classrooms. While study notebooks were initially rolled out on June 25 for personal accounts held by users 18 and older, school-issued accounts—including those for students under 18—are expected to gain access in the coming weeks.
Gemini Study Notebooks and Teacher Oversight
Study notebooks function as a personalized learning system where students can upload class materials or define a specific learning goal. The process begins with a diagnostic quiz to identify knowledge gaps, which Gemini then uses to generate short, interactive lessons that evolve as the student progresses.
For educators, the tool moves beyond simple content generation. Teachers can assign notebooks based on specific class materials and receive insights into where individual students or entire classes need support. According to Google Classroom Help documentation, teachers can also track whether students have opened an assigned notebook or initiated a conversation with it.

. To maintain academic integrity and source control, students can interact with these assigned notebooks but are prohibited from adding or editing the notebook’s sources.

The education stack connects Gemini and Classroom with NotebookLM, allowing students to sync their work across platforms. This integration enables the generation of flashcards and infographics from the same course materials without requiring the student to restart the process.
Google is also targeting high-stakes testing. Study notebooks currently support SAT prep, with no-cost practice tests for the GRE and ACT, built in partnership with The Princeton Review, arriving in the next few weeks. Further expansion is planned to include support for the ENEM exam.

Safety Guardrails for Teen Users
Because the rollout involves users under 18, Google has implemented a specific teen experience
designed to prioritize safety. Gemini has been tuned to trigger guardrails that prevent the appearance of inappropriate responses, such as those involving age-gated or illegal substances.
To foster information literacy, the AI is programmed to automatically run a double-check response feature the first time a teen user asks a fact-based question. This prompts the user to evaluate whether web content substantiates the AI’s response.
The onboarding process for younger students includes an AI Literacy video endorsed by the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) and ConnectSafely. Additionally, Google has committed to extra data protection for education users, stating it will not use chat data to improve its AI models.
Administrative Control and Institutional Risks
Despite the broad rollout, Google is keeping the tools off by default for teens. Access must be explicitly enabled by district administrators via the Admin console as an Additional Service.
This administrative gate is critical because the rollout intersects with varying government regulations on AI for minors. District leaders must now determine how these tools align with local policies regarding student data and the use of AI-generated activity signals for grading or instruction.
The expansion also introduces new complexities as Google moves toward AI agents capable of interacting with other apps. This shift increases the need for schools to scrutinize oversight and risk before deploying these tools at scale.
